Course Outline Welcome to Construction Technology at Lockview High School

As students in this class you will learn about the various areas of Construction Technology, in both a classroom and a lab setting.

The purpose of this course is to help you understand all aspects of construction (how it is organized, how it is controlled, it's impact on society and the opportunities it offers). In one Unit you will study the basic concepts of Frame House Construction and its’ relationship to the building industry, emphasizing building terms, building practices, building materials and the practical applications. In a Lab activity you will design a house floor plan and in another activity you will build a scale model of a house or a garage.

Some sample Units of study will include: Residential blueprint reading, applications of drafting and home design, an introduction to CAD, communications, environmental studies, building code, foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, and research of alternative building materials and methods.

Bridges, domes, skyscrapers, dams, tunnels: We use them every day, but how were they built? This is another area that we will explore.

This course will also reveal careers in Engineering, Architectural Design, and the Building Trades. You will be researching, authoring and publishing multimedia presentations of sample Careers at the Professional Level, Technical Level, and the Entry Level as part of the course. Post Secondary Opportunities and Certificate Programs at Community/Technical Colleges and Vocational/Technical Centers will also be discussed.

Emphasis will be placed on hands-on activities in the lab, critical thinking, problem solving, skill development, technical literacy, and safety while working in the lab with tools and equipment.

Lockview High School Construction Technology 10 Mr.Shreenan

Introduction

Your portfolio will be your “greatest asset” in this course, as I will explain in class. So…. be sure that it is organized from the beginning of the course, this makes it easier to find the resources that you will need to be successful in Contec 10.

Method

First you will need a 1-inch (25mm) 3 ring binder for ‘only Contec 10 work’. Next you need 4 section dividers. Label these (in order): NOTES, ASSIGNMENTS, RESOURCES, TEST / QUIZ. Paper: Lined, Unlined, Graph Flash Drive optional CD-R The very first page in your Portfolio will be the ‘handout page’ given to you the first day of class this Semester (Binder Front Page)…Portfolio)

Evaluation

Your Portfolio evaluation is found on the back of the Binder Front Page.

Site Analysis ENERGY-EFFICIENT STRUCTURES Chapter 13 Pg 190 SITE WORK

Homes should be sited to take advantage of natural features of the terrain, which offer energy conservation help. For example, a home site may offer windbreaks or summer shade. You have probably heard how one can use the sun’s energy to heat a home. To benefit from the winter sun’s heat, trees near the south wall of your home should be deciduous. Use your personal knowledge to share your ideas with your ‘house construction group’ and then we will share your answers with the class.

Summer Sun and Winter Sun The drawings show the benefits of planting deciduous trees to the South and West of your home. A well-placed mature, deciduous tree can produce enough shade to cool the roof and walls of the home, while blocking heat rays from entering through the home's windows. In the winter, leaves drop allowing the sun's rays to penetrate the branches, warming the roof, walls, and windows of the home just when winter warmth is needed.

1. List in your notes: several terrain features that can help to make a home more energy efficient.

2. Explain in your notes: how each feature can contribute to energy efficiency.

3. Think about the site of a new house or housing development that you have seen. What can you say about the site of the home(s). You can draw this map showing compass

Lockview High School Construction Technology 10 directions, new home, and natural features that make the new home more energy efficient. The map doesn’t have to be elaborate.

Tree height and shade candles The diagrams above illustrate the angle and height of the sun in July, and the amount of shade generated by trees of varying heights. Since summer rays are at their strongest and most direct, planting shade trees to directly impact the heat of the roof and windows can reduce energy bills by as much as 25 percent. To promote winter warmth, keep lower branches pruned (left).

4. After some discussion; describe this new home site in a few sentences in your notes. Consider that you are describing it to someone who has not yet seen your building lot.

5. Using a different colour pen or pencil, add to your map any landscaping changes you would make to improve the home’s energy efficiency.

6. Now consider various forms of homes from apartments to single family dwellings. What information can you now offer to the group and to the class on ‘ENERGY- EFFICIENT STRUCTURES’? Answer this in a paragraph or two.

7. Define the key terms on page 190.

7. Now do the Site Plan activity on the 11 X 17 “Plot Plan” Provided to you.
