Conference outline

This conference will consider recent developments in this area with a particular focus on the implications for Irish housing law of the European Convention of Human Rights. The recent judgments in Kay v United Kingdom (ECHR, 21 September 2010) and Manchester City Council v Pinnock (UK Supreme Court, 3 November 2010), and the implications which they have for Irish housing authorities under the ECHR Act 2003 will be discussed in detail. The expert panel of speakers will also address recent developments in negligence and nuisance. This event will be of interest to legal practitioners, local authorities, and organisations who deal with housing issues.

Speaker profiles Dr. Neil Maddox BL is a practising barrister in the area of commercial and property law. He is also a lecturer in NUI Maynooth. He is the author of The Land and Conveyancing Act 2009: A Commentary (Round Hall, 2009) and Mortgages: Law and Practice (Round Hall, 2007) and Housing Authority Law (Round Hall, 2010) and has written widely in property law and numerous other areas.

Dr. Angela Ward BL is a barrister who practises at the Irish, English and South Australian Bars. She has appeared at all levels of the UK judiciary as well as before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, in cases involving EU law and human rights law. She has lectured in Law at the Universities of Cambridge and Essex in the UK, and the Universities of New South Wales and Monash in Australia where she teaches comparative bills of rights. She is currently an advisor on the Victoria Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. She has published widely in the area of human rights and EU law and was junior counsel in the Pullen litigation.

Dr. Fiona de Londras is a lecturer in UCD School of Law, where she teaches property law. She is the author of Principles of Irish Property Law (2007, Clarus Press) and co- author (with Dr. Cliona Kelly) of The European Convention on Human Rights Act: Operation, Impact and Analysis (2010, Round Hall)
