EDO POSITION TITLE: POLICY AND COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR Location: Canberra City, ACT Salary: up to $60,000 (pro rata), including superannuation Part-time or full-time to be negotiated with the successful applicant The Environmental Defenders’ Office in the ACT (EDO ACT) assists members of the community who want to protect the environment through law. EDO is an independent community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law. The EDO’s core functions are: legal advice and litigation; policy and law reform; and public engagement and education. The Position: The EDO (ACT) is seeking a self-motivated person to work as its Policy and Communications Director, responsible to the Chief Executive Officer/Principal Solicitor. The Policy and Communications Director will assist in all areas of the EDOs core functions and deliver activities in the areas of policy and law reform and legal education. Due to funding restrictions, the EDO can offer the successful applicant 3 days employment. As the EDO is co-located in the Legal Aid office, the opportunity exists for the successful applicant to also engage in 2 days employment with the Legal Aid Helpdesk (see below for further detail). Key responsibilities: 1) Community Education  Develop plain English legal education materials, including fact sheets  Prepare and present papers at legal education workshops and professional development courses  Maintain a professional, user-friendly, up-to-date website  Lead regular online communications, across a range of digital platforms  Implement the Communications Strategy  Media liaison.

2) Policy and law reform  Undertake policy and law reform work, including preparation of submissions to the ACT and Federal governments on matters of environmental law  Engage with the ACT and Federal governments to influence the law  Implement strategic projects.

3) Organisational Management  Coordinate the recruitment, retention, supervision and encouragement of volunteers  Support to manage the ANU student legal clinic  Report to the Chief Executive Officer/Principal Solicitor  Other duties, as requested by the Chief Executive Officer/Principal Solicitor

LAC POSITION TITLE: HELPLINE SOLICITOR The Legal Aid ACT Helpdesk is the first point of contact for the provision of legal information and advice to people contacting the Commission either by telephone or in person. The Helpdesk provides a triage service to ensure those queries are dealt with quickly and effectively. The Helpdesk assesses the needs of the person and where appropriate give legal information, some limited procedural assistance or referral to other agencies. The three main practice areas are criminal law, family law and the general practice comprising civil, domestic violence, mental health and the helpline. The Position: The role of the Helpdesk is to assist with the provision of above information and advice services under the supervision of a solicitor. Limited supervised face to face advice work is contemplated as well as supporting other lawyers performing case work. Key responsibilities:  Answer telephone calls made to the Legal Aid Helpline  Assist people to apply for legal assistance and provide information regarding the legal system and in general on a range of legal matters  Interview clients to take initial instructions  Refer clients to other agencies and organisations where appropriate  Maintain accurate administrative records of services provided by the practice  Provide support to lawyers with managing case work Selection criteria: Demonstrated capacity to provide legal information and advice Excellent communication skills, written and oral Demonstrated advocacy and research skills Competent IT skills Initiative, sound judgment and the capacity to respond to requests for assistance in urgent matters Ability to work in and lead a small team Capacity to work with people suffering physical or mental health problems or from disadvantaged backgrounds
