Utility Letter to Plumbers

Utility Letter to Plumbers and Home Service Professionals

Dear :

As the utility responsible for delivering, a safe, reliable water supply to our community, we take water quality very seriously. I am writing you to make you aware of an issue that concerns our mutual customers and to enlist your assistance.

A common material used in plumbing until the 1980s, lead is also a powerful toxin that is harmful to human health. Children, infants and developing fetuses are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of lead because it accumulates in the body. While lead is not present in our source water supply or when the water leaves our community’s treatment facility , it may be present in older service lines that connect some customers to the community’s water system. Additionally, some properties may have builder-installed service lines and plumbing fixtures that contain lead components. This metal can dissolve into the water as it sits in the pipes, putting consumers at risk.

You can help protect your clients and neighbors. During the course of your duties, we encourage you to actively look for potential sources of lead in your customers’ plumbing systems. You likely already understand how to identify lead-based pipes and fixtures, but we have included some information on our website, , that we hope will be useful as a reference.

If you find lead-based plumbing components at a property, we urge you to strongly encourage your customers to replace them as soon as possible. You should also feel free to refer them to our customer service center or website for additional information.

Lead exposure is too important a health issue to ignore. We appreciate your support and assistance, and are happy to provide additional information upon request. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a presentation on this issue, please call at .

Sincerely,
