Algebra I is a year-long, required course and is a graduation requirement. It includes a 3-part state test. This TNReady test must be used as their second semester test per the state.

Course Materials The following is highly recommended to help the student succeed: 1. Pencils 2. Textbook (students may also access the textbook online) 3. Loose-leaf notebook paper 4. Calculator – an inexpensive recommendation is a TI-30XS. However, we will use the TI-Nspire (Non CAS model) calculators in the classroom. These calculators are not loaned to students so it may be necessary for them to stay for tutoring to have calculator access. Should you wish to purchase one, you can find used or refurbished TI-Nspire CX’s on eBay and Amazon at a reduced price. 5. Math Binder – (3-ring) 1-1/2” recommended (with pockets). The binder is to keep class notes, handouts, work, tests, vocabulary, etc....MUST stay organized. This will be checked periodically for a grade. 6. Dividers (for binder – 4 needed) Miscellaneous, 1st Sem. Assignments, 2nd Sem. Assignments, Tests/Quizzes

Grading – Nine Weeks Average (subject to change) Activity Points 10% Homework 30% Tests/Quizzes 60%

Semester Average (subject to change) First Semester Grade: Second Semester Grade: 1st 9 weeks 37.5% 3rd 9 weeks 37.5% 2nd 9 weeks 37.5% 4th 9 weeks 37.5% Semester Test 25% State Test 25%

The state test must count as 25% of their second semester average per state requirement. Please note that the state test is given in three parts during the testing window mandated by the state department. This window typically occurs the latter weeks of April through the first weeks of May. These tests are extremely challenging and your child must take it very seriously when preparing to take them. Students are responsible for taking an active part in their learning. It is vitally important to not let academic problems go unaddressed, especially in high school mathematics classes. Parents/guardians and students will be able to monitor grades in Skyward. There is information in the guidance office regarding instructions to set up an account. A student may improve his/her grade by attending after school tutoring. Math tutoring is available two days a week after school at no cost to the student.

Activity Points Students will be expected to complete 100 activity points. Students will be given a list of activities that they may choose from to complete this requirement at the beginning of each nine weeks. There are many ways to complete the 100 points! This is not extra credit.

Homework/Assignment Policy All assignments are expected to be completed by the given due date or time. Completed assignments will be given a 100 for effort and must have work shown. I do not award partial credit for incomplete homework. Arranging for any make-up work is the responsibility of the student. The school policy states the number of days allowed for make-up work to be turned in will be equal to the number of days that the student was absent. (Ex. 2 days absent = 2 days to turn in make-up work). All missing assignments/homework corrections for a chapter are due by the day of the chapter test. Students are given time in class to complete his/her assignments. If the student has homework, it should be minimal if he/she used their time in class wisely.

Test Grades Each student will be given tests periodically. If your child doesn’t take an active part in his/her learning, grades will begin dropping quickly. 60% of the nine weeks average is tests/quizzes. Students may be assigned test corrections as a homework assignment. Struggling students are encouraged to take advantage of all opportunities to help raise scores. Study guides will be given before every chapter test. It is vitally important to not let academic problems go unaddressed, especially in high school math classes! Students will have an opportunity to retake any test (students are permitted to retest up to 2 weeks after the graded test is given back). Retakes must be done in math tutoring after school.

Attendance/Tardy Policy Attendance in this class is very important. You are expected to attend class every day. If you are late for class, you will sign in as tardy. Part of being successful at any job is learning the responsibility of being there and being prompt. The school attendance/tardy policy will be followed.

Extra Credit There are 2 ways to earn extra credit: 1. Notebook Check. Students may turn in their notebook with a completed table of contents page, all homework assignments, tests, quizzes, notes, vocabulary, formulas sheet, calculator tricks and activity points at the end of the grading period to earn extra credit. All of the above must be included in an orderly fashion, using tabs, in the 3-ring section of their notebook to receive 2 average points. No partial credit will be given. 2. Empty ink cartridges. Students may turn in empty ink cartridges to receive extra points on a test grade. One cartridge may be brought in by the student for each major test grade during the nine weeks. (Ex. 9 major tests – 9 empty ink cartridges permitted) One empty cartridge will add 5 points on to one major test grade.

Classroom Expectations Not following the classroom expectations or procedures will result in a referral for disciplinary action. . Bring pencil (PENS are not allowed), loose-leaf paper, binder, and homework/assignment to class daily. . Be respectful to everyone and use your manners. . Be in classroom when the tardy bell rings. . Listen and follow directions. . Do your own work…you will NOT be successful if you copy a classmates work or surf the internet for answers. However, the internet is a wonderful tool for help if used properly and not abused. . All handbook rules will be enforced (please note the new cell phone policy) . Disrespect, sleeping, and repetitive zeros on homework will not be tolerated . We will take bathroom breaks as a class. If the bathroom break procedure is not followed, bathroom break privileges will be lost. It is up to you to make this class enjoyable and fun for all, so please do your part!

Pearson Online Textbook Information You will have access to the textbook online. Please note, the online textbook website uses Adobe flash player and is not compatible with Apple products. Under the student resources tab, you will have access to worksheets and tutoring videos. Personal Statement My goal is that every student learns and feels successful in math. I want each of you to earn the highest grade possible; however, learning the material is what you need most. Good grades will follow. However, it will be challenging and requires commitment from you. Students are expected to do all assignments to the best of their ability and seek help if they have trouble. Assignments are necessary to help learn the required material. Practice is essential to learning algebra. Please feel free to contact me at any time during the year if you have any questions. I do not have planning period this year but I will return any call or email as soon as possible. It has been my experience that a student gets as much out of a class as they put into it.
