Lincoln’s Shoes

As Lincoln, Jorge, and the rest of their family approached the security checkpoint, Lincoln stopped for a minute. “The looks pretty daunting,” he said as he surveyed the crowded scene.

The line curled back and forth, like an enormous lazy snake, though the people in it were far from relaxed. At the snake’s head of the line there were six checkpoints, each one run by a half-dozen security agents. At each checkpoint, each piece of luggage was carefully x-rayed. The passengers then had to pass through a metal detector, where the least bit of metal might set it off. Every few minutes, Lincoln could hear the alarm wailing and a passenger would be pulled aside

“I wonder what it takes to set that thing off,” he asked to nobody in particular. But Jorge responded, “Anything metal, you numbskull. Just take everything out of your pockets and you’ll be fine”

Finally Lincoln arrived in front of one of the x-ray machines. He put his backpack on the conveyor belt and then proceeded to walk through the metal detector.

“If you’ve got any change or other stuff in your pockets, put it all in this plastic tray,” the guard advised Lincoln, who did as he suggested. Then he walked through and there was the piercing, shrill sound of the alarm. Lincoln turned bright red and was mortified. The agent checked him with a wand and then said, “OK, come over here and take off your shoes.”

Still embarrassed, Lincoln sat down, slipped off his boat like shoes, and handed them to the agent. The agent checked them out and said, “Yup, that’s the problem, you’ve got metal toes in these shoes.”

Lincoln had had no idea that his shoes were partially made from metal. As he put on his shoes, Jorge come over and joked with him saying, “Man, you looked like a beet after the alarm went off.”

Lincoln didn’t say anything, only he though to himself, “Next time I fly I’m going to wear sneakers”.

Reaching down next to the tree, he picked up a large gold ring, the type that sports team give to their players when they win championships.

He held the ring in his hand, admiring its weight and the unintelligible writing. He tried the heft ring on, but it slipped effortless over each of his knuckled – it belong on a large man’s fingers. Then he wondered who might have left it there, or more likely lost it, and as soon as he thought about it, he had a sinking feeling.

When he had picked up the ring, he thought it would look great on his bookshelf next to his football and baseball trophies. But when he thought about it, he realized that if he put it out anywhere his parents or brothers would notice. Then he would have to explain where he had found it. On the way home, he decided to keep it hidden, however, when he walked into his apartment, he changed his mind. The Little Lie

Lucy knew that she was not telling the truth as soon as the words left her mouth, but by then there was really nothing she could do. She felt an immediate pang of regret, knowing that she was not following through on her intention to stop lying. It wasn’t actually a big lie, and certainly not a lie that hurt anybody. It was just a few little additions to something that had really happened, a few embellishments.

All she had done was add a rockslide and a snowstorm to her spring camping trip, and maybe make a few more parts sound like an adventure. The problem was that she had been adding to her stories for so long that she was losing track of what she had told and to whom. Lucia was beginning to not really be able to remember anymore what she had or had not done.

Her friend, Justin, had recently said something to her about it, that he doubted her from time to time. He also wondered aloud whey she didn’t think her real life was exciting enough. It was true she wanted more excitement, but it was slowly dawning on her that this was not a good way to find it.

As Lucia watched her rapt audience wait for her to continue, she didn’t know what to say and consider just telling the truth. But immediately she could feel the hot flash of embarrassment rise in her cheeks just thinking about it.

“Next time”, she said to herself.
