A RESOLUTION to proclaim March 2, 2012, as Read Across America Day. WHEREAS, March 2, 2012, is the 15th Annual National Education Association's Read Across America Day; and WHEREAS, Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that encourages children in every community across the United States to celebrate reading; and WHEREAS, March 2nd is the birthday of the esteemed and beloved children's author Dr. Seuss; and WHEREAS, Read Across America brings the joys of reading to children of all ages; and WHEREAS, children who are inspired to read do better academically; and WHEREAS, reading is the catalyst for our students' future academic success, preparation for American jobs of the future, and our students' future ability to compete in a global market; and WHEREAS, education is the key to Kentucky's well being and long-term quality of life; and WHEREAS, the joy of reading stays with a child for a lifetime; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the

Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Kentucky House of Representatives proudly proclaims March 2, 2012, as Read Across America Day in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and endorses the observance as an opportunity to motivate children of all ages to be excited about reading.

Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Kentucky Education Association, Capital Avenue, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601; and to Commissioner Terry Holliday, Kentucky Department of Education, 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
