Anzac Day Celebrations On Tuesday 29th the children participated in our school Anzac Day Service. As in other years, several members of the RSL attended our service. We are very grateful for their support and participation. The service was led by the captains, vice captains and prefects of the school. Children who represented their class on the SRC laid a wreath on behalf of their class. The service was conducted with great respect and dignity. Well done to our School leaders.

Primary Cross Country

The Primary Cross Country was held on the last Thursday of Term 1. Although the weather wasn’t perfect and it drizzled on and off the entire morning, the students didn’t let that bother them. Congratulations to all students who participated, you all put in a fantastic effort. Also, a big thank you to all the parents who helped on the day. Without your support these events wouldn’t run so smoothly. Below are the results of the top 6 students in each age group who will be going on to District Cross Country in Koorawatha, on Monday June 2nd.

Change to our Spelling Program

This week, all Canowindra Public students from Grades 3 to 6 are starting on a program called Spelling Mastery. The focus of Spelling Mastery, as the name implies, is teaching spelling to a high degree of mastery. Its purpose is to teach spelling skills, rules and strategies and promote the transfer of correct spelling into writing. Years of research prove that memorising lists of words, getting them right on Friday, then forgetting about them is ineffective.

You will notice a change in expectations in your child’s homework. Words that do not follow regular rules will still have to be practised, but testing of these words will be ongoing.

4 | P a g e In order to achieve maximum benefit from this program all students have been assessed and placed in 1 of the 6 levels of the program closest to their current spelling ability. Movement between levels will be regularly evaluated and encouraged in order to keep up with your child’s progress.

If you have any questions about our Spelling Mastery Program please do not hesitate to come and talk to me.

P&CNews EASTER RAFFLE

The Easter Raffle winners were Kiara Mason x2, Jordan Smith, Fay Whalan, Holly Wilson, Kobie Rogers, Nate Stanbury, and Eliza Mitchell. Thank you to everybody who donated Easter eggs and bought raffle tickets to support the P & C. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

BALLOON GLOW The Canowindra P&C was fortunate enough with thanks to the Committee of the Canowindra Balloon Glow & Night Markets to have another successful year selling Roast Lamb & Gravy Baguettes with Caramelised Onion & Rocket. Not a moment goes by without thanking Julie Fliedner who has taken this Fundraiser on board and didn’t forget a thing. Yes, she had lots of helpers and the P&C is so grateful to all the willing parents who were busy on the night juggling kids and helping each other to support the School stall. Our special thanks to Belubula Butchery for sourcing such quality lamb and the 12+ hours in slicing it so professionally by Kylie, your time and contribution was very recognised. Canowindra Services Club for the Tea & Coffee, Ice, Gravy and support, IGA for being so accommodating with supplies and last minute purchases, Canowindra Bakehouse for delivering the bread order to the site and Elly’s Express for kindly bringing over the oven warmer on hire from Cowra. The town visitors loved the dinner that we provided them, selling out with over 600 rolls made on the night. Many people commented on the lovely signage so kindly made by the Year 6 class and simply gave an extra donation to support our school on top of paying for dinner. We hope to be a part of the 2015 Balloon Glow, it was a wonderful night and the funds will now benefit the children of Canowindra Public School. MOTHERS DAY

Just a reminder that next week we are holding our Mothers day stall for the kids to purchase a gift for the special woman in their life to say thanks. Whether it be Mum, Step mum, Grandma, Aunt or just someone special. There will be loads of gifts ranging from $2 to about $10. If you are able to help on Tuesday 6th or Wednesday 7th during lunch time to man the stall it would be greatly appreciated! It would be great to see some new faces! Don't be shy, we would love to meet you! There is not a lot involved, it only takes about 2 hours in total to do all the classes.
