Loadings: Design criteria - Horizontal Uniformly Distributed Loading (HUDL):

- 0.36 kN/m:  Inside a single family dwelling (excluding external balconies).  Glass thickness: 12 mm.

- 0.74 kN/m:  Residential balconies, roofs, office or work areas and institutional buildings.  Glass thickness: 15 mm.

- 1.5 kN/m:  Retail environments and areas subject to overcrowding with a width of less than 3000 mm.  Glass thickness: 19 mm.

- 3.0 kN/m:  Shopping malls, assembly areas and areas subject to overcrowding with a width of more than 3000 mm.  Glass thickness: 25 mm.

Options: Glass:  Toughened: Standard.  Laminated and toughened: Optional, with a choice of three types of interlayer. If required, the interlayer can incorporate a wide range of tints, colours, patterns and textures.  Low iron glass: Where absolute transparency is essential; avoids the slight green tinge which is inherent in normal toughened glass.  External applications: Additional coatings can be applied to the surface of the glass, including ones to combat the build-up of dirt.  Bespoke designs are available.  Corners: Square or mitred.  High strength transparent adhesive, cured by ultra violet radiation, can be used to join panels together.

- Glazing film:  High strength, self-adhesive plastic film can be applied to one or both sides of the toughened glass.  Particularly suitable where balustrades are positioned above pedestrian areas.  Film can be clear or a design feature.

- Manifestation:  Glass can be acid etched or sandblasted.  Patterns, words or logos can be produced.

- Screen printing:  Permanently applied to the glass surface.  Any design and colour can be applied.

Glass support system:

- Aluminium wedge channels:  Channel size: 100 x 58 mm.  Glass thickness: 12–25 mm.  Four channel shapes are available to allow for side or top mounting to various structures.  Channels can be powder coated, clad with trims or built-in.

- Steel clamping plates:  Plates of any size can be constructed to suit the substrate.  Individual clamping plates (minimum 100 mm wide x 150 mm high) can be used up to 500 mm centres.  Continuous clamping plates can be used with a minimum height of 100 mm.  Galvanized or stainless steel plate can be used for external applications.

- Slimline point fixings:  Circular individual stainless steel fixings.  Available in extended or reduced lengths to suit stepped fascias.  Design compatible with offset handrail systems.

Handrails:

- Standard stainless steel:  Slotted over the glass.  An integral gasket protects the glass and holds the handrail firmly in place.  Available in a range of finishes, including wood effect finishes.

- Standard timber:  Accurately cut slot minimizes the need for a gasket or silicone fillet to the underside of the rail.  Available in a range of standard shapes.  Bespoke sizes can be produced, incorporating lighting, roller blinds and other features.  Curves and bends can be formed to any radius.  Can be produced in any readily available timber species.  Finished with multiple layers of lacquer.

- Alternative metal range:  Available in four standard shapes, to special order.  Best suited to horizontal runs of balustrade owing to a smaller choice of junctions and curves.  To minimize obstruction to views, a small stainless steel capping channel can be used.  Available in stainless steel or brass.

- Offset handrails:  50 mm diameter handrail, with a range of brackets for direct fixing to the glass.  Allow glass to be positioned centrally on narrow stairwells, with the handrail wrapping around at changes in direction of the stair.  Glass can be extended higher than the level of the handrail for increased safety if required.  Available in stainless steel, powder coating, timber or brass.

Visual base detailing:  A range of trims and cover plates are available to conceal or accentuate the detailing at the base of the structural glass balustrade.  Various cladding and fixing options are available.  Consult Sapphire™ Balustrades for details.

Lunalite (LED Lighting):  LEDs can be set into the handrail.  Can be used to safely illuminate walkways and stairs in exterior areas that are used at night.  Can also be mounted within the base channel for upward directional floodlighting through the
