Brown 7 DDN: l:\council\bills\bbm\9179som99.doc 8 DPB: 19990331 9 SUB: Miss Hallie Mae Byrd, Resolutions 10 11 12 HST: 13 14 Body Date Action Description Com Leg Involved 15 ______16 House 19990331 Received from Senate 17 Senate 19990330 Introduced, adopted, returned 18 with concurrence 19 House 19990330 Introduced, adopted, sent to Senate 20 21 22 Printed Versions of This Bill 23 24 25 26 27 TXT: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS 12 OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND 13 FRIENDS OF ONE OF LEE COUNTY’S FINEST CITIZENS, 14 MISS HALLIE MAE BYRD WHO PASSED AWAY ON 15 FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1999. 16 17 Whereas, on March 5, 1999, Lee County and the State of South 18 Carolina lost one of its finest citizens, Miss Hallie Mae Byrd; and 19 20 Whereas, Miss Byrd was born in Bishopville, South Carolina, on 21 May 26, 1908, the second of eight children born to the late Mary F. 22 Franklin and Lucious Byrd; and 23 24 Whereas, Hallie graduated from Dennis High School and 25 continued her education at Morris College in Sumter, South 26 Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education 27 degree in 1957; and 28 29 Whereas, Morris College maintained a place of importance in Miss 30 Byrd’s life as she was an active member of the college’s Alumni 31 Society for many years; and 32 33 Whereas, she taught language arts and other subjects at Dennis 34 High School for approximately forty-seven years and, after her 35 retirement from the Lee County School System, continued to 36 substitute teach for many years; and 37 38 Whereas, Miss Byrd was an inspiration, motivator, and wonderful 39 educator because of her love of teaching and children; and 40 41 Whereas, foremost in Miss Byrd’s life was her religious faith; at a 42 young age Hallie professed her faith and was baptized in the

1 [3796] 1 1 Bishopville A.M.E. Church; she later joined the New Bethel 2 A.M.E. Church where she was a Pastor’s Aide and a Sunday 3 School teacher, and a devoted member of the Missionary Society 4 and Senior Choir; and 5 6 Whereas, Miss Byrd leaves many relatives who will cherish her 7 memory; among them are two sisters, Elizabeth Harris Gainer and 8 Elease Stephenson, and a foster brother, Robert Lee Thomas, all of 9 Cleveland, Ohio, a cousin, Marion Franklin of Bishopville, as well 10 as nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephew, great-grandnieces and 11 great-grandnephews, and many other relatives and friends; 12 13 Whereas, Miss Byrd’s family remembers that one of her dearest 14 past-times and greatest loves was her garden and that she could be 15 seen tending to her vegetables every day; and 16 17 Whereas, the Bishopville community will sorely miss Hallie Mae 18 Byrd and her many positive contributions to the spirit of their 19 town; and 20 21 Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the members of the General 22 Assembly pause in their deliberations to note the passing of so 23 great a daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore, 24 25 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 26 concurring: 27 28 That the members of the General Assembly extend their deepest 29 sympathy to the family and friends of one of Lee County’s finest 30 citizens, Miss Hallie Mae Byrd who passed away on Friday, March 31 5, 1999. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 Miss Byrd’s family. 35 ----XX----
