They look wonderful! We were all deeply saddened in school by the events, which happened in Manchester and London recently. Your child may have discussed the events with their class teacher if questions have been raised in an age appropriate manner. Classes held a minute’s silence this week to remember the victims and their families and we have offered prayers to God in remembrance.

Here is some practical advice for parents if you are struggling to know how to discuss the events with your child:

Practical tips for when discussing a terrorist attack with your child:

1) Offer reassurance to children, especially younger ones, may be afraid that a similar attack will happen to them, or to their friends and family. It is important to reassure them from the outset of discussion that such attacks are very rare, and although it is possible, it is highly unlikely that something like this will happen to them, or to anyone they know.

2) Encourage questions and answer them honestly younger children are naturally curious, and may after hearing about a terrorist event be full of questions and theories about what they have seen or heard. To ignore, dismiss, or not answer these questions, or to pretend that nothing has happened, can be counterproductive. It is important to answer children’s questions honestly and in an age-appropriate manner.

The CBBC Newsround website link below offers further advice for parents and children if children are ever upset or worried about events they hear of in the news.

Pedestrian Training with Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2

This week our younger children have started their Lancashire Right Start Pedestrian Training led by Mrs Wilson. This is aimed at teaching children road safety awareness. If your child has been involved, see if you can find out what they have learnt and if they can demonstrate the pedestrian safety rules, when out and about with you. For more parent information and help on this topic, please follow the link below. http://think.direct.gov.uk/education/early-years-and-primary/

Summer Uniform and Sun Safety

A reminder that our summer uniform is:

Boys: grey shorts, short sleeve blue shirt, school clip on tie (no polo shirts please). Girls: blue and white summer dresses.

When the weather is sunny, can we remind parents and carers to please apply sun cream to your child before school and we recommend a named sun hat/cap is brought to school too.

Our children are encouraged to drink water throughout the school day and we promote that you always send your child to school with a water bottle; however we believe this is particularly important during the Summer term, when the days are warmer.

Thank you for supporting us in keeping your child safe in the sun. Congratulations to Miss Hastings on the safe arrival of her baby girl!

PTA BBQ and Summer Fair Friday 14 th July 2017

Would you like to rent a pitch? Thank you to all those parents who attended the PTA meeting this week. We have started to make plans for our annual Summer Fair and BBQ event on our school field. We will be renting out pitches once again to any small businesses or parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles or friends in our community, who would like to sell their ‘wares’ and rent a pitch for £10 for the evening. If you are interested in doing this and being part of a fun night please contact Mrs Parkinson in our school office. Do you have a ‘service’ you could offer as a raffle prize? We are hoping to make our Summer BBQ raffle even bigger and better this year and wondered if any parents, carers or relatives in our community have a service they could offer for raffle prizes? Eg. An afternoon of gardening or dog grooming? If you would like to offer up your time as a prize – and promote your business at the same time, please leave your details at the school office.

Volunteers Wanted: As always we need lots of volunteers to help our biggest fundraising event of the year be as successful as possible. After half term we will be looking for parents to sign up and help out. If in the meantime you know you can definitely offer some time on the day please leave your details at the school office. This year the money raised by the PTA has funded: - The Life Education Caravan - Year 5 visit to the Planetarium at Rossall - Reading Books for the infant classes - Leavers books and journals for Year 6. - Books for all the children at Christmas time.
