“Love, Loss, and What I Wore” at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center of the Arts presents “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” October 8 to 25 in the Black Box Theater. Performances are 8 PM Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2 PM on Sunday. Tara Galvin directs.

“Love, Loss, and What I Wore” is an intimate and entertaining collection of stories by Nora and Delia Ephron about clothing and accessories and the funny and poignant memories they trigger. Based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman and tales shared by friends of the Ephrons, the show, in Nora Ephron’s words, "is not about fashion; it is about what clothes really are to us, those moments when we are constantly trying to find our identity through them.”

The show opened in 2008 and has been a hit nationally and throughout the world.

“There are some wonderful stories, told through monologues and conversations between two and three people,” said Galvin. “The show is about growing up, falling in love, and falling out of love, stories that everyone can relate to.”

One of Galvin’s favorite parts is the “clothesline” scene. “This is a sequence of scenes that tickles me every time I see it,” said Galvin. “Women are talking about bras, about trying on clothes in dressing rooms, and other topics. Every time we run through it there is something different, and it is just a lot of fun.”

Gingy, the narrator, tells her life story, illustrating each turning point with an item of clothing. Other women join in with their own reminiscences. In the Black Box production, Gingy is played by both Shelby Allen and Paula Dellatte, each taking on the role on different nights. Three other women, Jeanne Lohnes, Victoria Smith, and Jeanny Wishingstone, play changing roles—and trade roles on different nights—representing a variety of other women.

“The different actresses bring out different aspects of the same story; it’s fascinating,” said Galvin. “To get the full effect, people may have to come more than once!”

Allen and Dellatte have years of theatrical experience, and Dellatte has also done film and voiceover work. Lohnes is an accomplished actor and improv performer, and both Smith and Wishingstone have experience in Cape Cod theater productions. Galvin has directed “The Vagina Monologues,” “The Santaland Diaries,” and other plays at Cotuit Center for the Arts.
