DURHAM KENNEL CLUB Agility Class Information Fall 2014

Thank you for your interest in agility classes at Durham Kennel Club (DKC). We will offer an Obstacle Familiarization class and a Basic Agility Handling class on Mondays for 6 weeks at the DKC training building on Guess Rd. If you are not sure which class best suits your dog, and particularly if you have taken classes other than those offered at DKC, please contact Mary Whorton at [email protected] to help you determine which class is most appropriate for you and your dog. NOTE: Bitches in season will be allowed in all classes at the handler’s own risk provided the dog wears protective britches. Class dates: Dates: Test dates Aug 25 and Sept 8 Class dates: Sept 22, 29, Oct 6, Oct 13, Oct 27, Nov 3 Make up date Nov 10.

Obstacle Familiarization - To be enrolled in this class, ALL dogs MUST be tested for ON LEAD control and must display no aggressive behavior towards other dogs or people. Testing will take place on Monday, Aug 25 and Sept 8, 2014 at 7 pm at the DKC building. Send in application, then e-mail Mary Whorton to schedule testing [email protected]. This class is intended for dogs (10 months or older) and/or handlers who have either not done agility before or who feel that they could use some more work establishing a solid foundation on how to correctly perform the different obstacles. This class would be appropriate both for beginners and for dogs who have had one or perhaps even two classes before, but who are still having some issues either with specific obstacles or with general confidence levels. Dogs will be introduced to the chute, tunnel, table, tire, dog walk, A-frame, weave poles, teeter totter, and jumps. This class will meet Monday EVENINGS from 6:30-7:30 PM.

Instructors: Mary Whorton and Ann Carter Cost: $90 non-member $60.00 DKC member (2 club services required for discount and at least one meeting attended)

Basic Agility Handling – This class is for those dogs and handlers who have successfully completed an obstacle familiarization course or beyond. Focus will be on teaching dogs and handlers how to properly execute many of the maneuvers seen on agility courses. These will include but not be limited to front cross, rear cross, blind cross, push, pull, wraps, 180’s, lead outs and more. Dogs must be tested for OFF LEAD control by the instructors for admission to the DKC sequence agility classes only if the dog has never taken a class with us before. Contact Mary Whorton at [email protected] to schedule testing for your dog if necessary. This class will meet Monday EVENINGS from 7:45-8:45 PM.

Instructors: Thomas Givens and Wanda Wise Cost: $90 non-member $60.00 DKC member (2 club services required for discount and at least one meeting attended)

VERY IMPORTANT – We understand that in the agility setting, dogs do get excited and may on occasion lunge at or chase other dogs that are running. However, if any dog willfully attacks a human or another dog while in class, you will be asked to leave and may not return with that dog.

Classes fill very quickly and space is limited – please return your application and a check made payable to DKC as soon as possible. If you need to have your dog tested for admission go ahead and send in your application NOW to hold a place in the class and call to schedule a testing session as soon as possible! Please do NOT send your health certificate in with your application – bring it with you on the first night of class – your dog will not be admitted to class without it. If you have any further questions, please contact Mary Whorton. [email protected] or 919-732-0972. Revised 8/08 DURHAM KENNEL CLUB Agility Class Application Form
