Battle of the Books 2017!!!

Greetings, Chappelow students and parents, The Battle of the Books is coming.

“What is that?” you ask.

It’s a fun event in which you and your team of 3-4 students read the books on the Battle of the Books 2017 book list (which can be found in your Chappelow library or on our webpage.) You then compete, quiz-show-style, to answer the most questions correctly.

In March or April, we’ll have a School Battle for grades 1-8 and then the 3rd-8th grade winning teams from Chappelow will go to the District Battle of the Books.

It’s a great way to enjoy awesome books, spend time with friends, and show Chappelow school spirit and PRIDE! (Almost all of these books are AR books, too! You can quiz on them while you’re at it!)

If you want to participate, turn in this signed permission form to the library (remember, you must get three signatures: your parent or guardian, your teacher, and YOU).

1. Form a team of 3-4 students and think of a great team name. If you need help finding team- mates, think of kids in your grade who love to read! Remember, your team-mates need permission forms turned in too! 2. Get the book list for your grade level from the library, decide who will read what and start reading! You can find all of the titles in our Chappelow library! 3. Find an adult coach to help your team train and prepare. If you need a coach, ask one of your team parents to help you. If you cannot find a coach, let Mrs. Parker know asap. 4. Read some more! Every book on the list should be read by at least 2 of your teammates! 5. Compete in the Chappelow Battle of the Books in the spring (date TBA). 6. If you win, go on to compete in the District Battle of the Books (dates TBA).

If you want a permission slip or have any questions, contact Mrs. Parker in the Library (348-1291) [email protected] Battle of the Books 2016 Permission Form

****If you or someone you know would like to coach your child’s team, that would be wonderful! Parents, teachers, or high school students can be coaches. Coaches do not have to read the books, but are certainly welcome to. As a coach, you need to:

*Be the contact person for parents and battle coordinators (we need your email and/or phone number). *Organize meetings (frequency, location, and time; fun and focused, but not too frequent or lengthy). *Help decide team name, make team poster and t-shirts (optional), and attend the battles to support your team. *Help your team decide who reads what, encourage your team to read, help memorize titles & authors (flashcards, for example), help with practice questions.

Coaching a team is not a huge time commitment (about 1 meeting per month until closer to the battle, then more, if you desire, and attendance with your team at the Battles). It is incredibly rewarding and fun for you and the kids! Please consider it!
