From Homeless to Hero: TJ Perkins From Homeless to Hero: TJ Perkins “Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” This is a phrase that now new WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins lived by. It represented staying in the moment and not getting ahead of yourself. At first glance, some may think TJ Perkins has it all. What some may not know, is the price he paid to get into the position he is today. It all started when TJ was thirteen years old. That is when he got his start in professional wrestling. He began to train at a wrestling school down in L.A. He enrolled into wrestling school after his first week of high school. From then on he trained constantly to become the best professional wrestler he could be. By the time he was 16, he was wrestling for many promotions in Southern California and even Tijuana, Mexico! While most people his age were worrying about what’s “cool” to wear to school and what to post on twitter, TJ was traveling to a different country and performing in front of thousands and thousands of fans. By 18 years old, TJ Perkins was an independent wrestling phenomenon. He had wrestled for dozens of promotions including New Japan Pro Wrestling. He was on television and Pay-Per-View in the states. Now TJ felt the moment was right. With all this momentum what else would be a better time to peruse his dream of becoming a WWE superstar and traveling to Florida? Well, let’s just say that relocation went rather unfavorably for TJ. With no education, TJ moved down to Florida to hopefully make his way into FCW, a WWE developmental program at the time. That plan ended up not working out. Perkins then got evicted. He was homeless for a while after. His parents over in L.A. went bankrupt. They were banking on him to go big time and catch the WWE’s attention. As TJ Perkins has said multiple times “Sometimes you bet the house and lose” Perkins then went back to L.A. and managed to get back and wrestle for some of the promotions that he had previously. It was basically like he had to restart his career. TJ sees it as a “blessing in disguise”. He feels like that helped him mature more and learn not to take things for granted. TJ ended up being able to help him and his family get back on their feet. Fast forward to 2016 and WWE announces that they will be holding a Global Cruiserweight Classic Tournament. There, they would gather the top cruiserweights (Wrestlers 205lbs and under) from around the globe and put them in a tournament. By this point TJ Perkins had just finished wrestling for the second largest wrestling company in the United States, in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Perkins was offered an opportunity to represent his Filipino background in the cruiserweight classic. With no hesitation, Perkins accepted. Little did he know this would be the beginning of something monumental. At the end of the tournament, rumors were floating around that TJ had finally gotten offered a WWE contract. The HEAVY favorite in the Tournament, Kota Ibushi, is set to square off against TJ. Throughout the whole tournament, TJ has been “bracket buster”. Overcoming odds that nobody expected him too. TJ ends up beating Ibushi. Now it’s the finals. Gran Metalik Vs TJ Perkins. The COO of the WWE and former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H, came out to say a few words to the crowd. He talked about how monumental and how historic this tournament has been. How the winner will go down in history as the winner of the inaugural WWE Cruiserweight Classic tournament. Then Triple H revealed that the winner would debut on raw as the first ever WWE Cruiserweight champion. After a long fought battle, TJ Perkins was able to prevail. After all the adversity he had to overcome, he finally accomplished his dream. To make it to the WWE from the streets to the WWE. From nothing to something. Now, you can catch TJ Perkins on WWE Monday Night Raw with the cruiserweight championship while holding it with pride and joy. I guess you can say, in the famous words of Vince McMahon, “The boyhood dream has come true”. .

Cubed Circle Newsletter 201 – We're Not Dead Given the absence of a newsletter last week following our 200th issue the week prior new readers could be forgiven for thinking that we were on an unannounced extended hiatus. However, as long- time readers will know this newsletter, if anything, is vulnerable to technical difficulties, even ones as trivial as the loss of a laptop charger on holiday. However, after a week off not only are we back with a double issue featuring our last piece of G1 coverage, two weeks of NXT, Mid-South from 1982, and two weeks of RAW featuring Sting, but we also have the debut of a brand new column – the Pro-Wres Digest! The goal of the Digest is to encapsulate the week that was in pro-wrestling in 3-4 pages, providing a TL;DR of sorts for those unable to devote enough time to following every news story that breaks in a given week. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for September 6th - 12th. Ben Carass. On Friday September 4th, John Cena was thought to have suffered an injury during a house show match with Kevin Owens in Hampton, VA. Amazingly, it wasn’t the springboard stunner that went wrong but another move John Cena should not be attempting, the code/infrared. Cena went for the move and Owens kind of just fell down on his chest; imagine an axe-guillotine driver but with Owens losing his balance too. When the report first broke, people were freaking out about Cena possibly suffering a neck injury, since they did stop the match for the referee to check on Cena and they went right to the finish after he was checked out.

2014 was a unique year for pro-wrestling, one that will undoubtedly be viewed as historically significant in years to follow. Whether it is to be reflected upon positively or negatively is not only highly subjective, but also context-specific with major occurrences transpiring across the pro-wrestling world over the last 12 months, each with its own strong, and at times far reaching, consequences. The WWE launched its much awaited Network, New Japan continued to expand, CMLL booked lucha's biggest match in well over a decade, culminating in the country's first million dollar gate, TNA teetered more precariously on the brink of death than perhaps ever before, Daniel Bryan won the WWE's top prize, Dragon Gate and DDT saw continued success before their loyal niche audiences, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk departed the WWE with one ending up in the most unexpected of places, a developing and divergent style produced some of the best indie matches of the year, the European scene flourished, the Shield disbanded, Batista returned, Daniel Bryan relinquished his championship, and the Undertaker's streak came to an unexpected and dramatic end. These are but some of the happenings, which made 2014 the year that it was, and it is in this year-book that we look to not only recap all of these events and more, but also contemplate their relevance to the greater pro-wrestling landscape, both for 2015 and beyond. It should be stated that this year-book was inspired by the DKP Annuals that were released in 2011 and 2012, in fact, it was the absence of a 2013 annual that inspired us to produce a year-book for 2014.

Plus, coverage of the penultimate, and expectedly drab, RAW on the Road to WrestleMania! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter, Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for March 20th – March 26th. Ben Carass. Top Stories: The WWE house show at Madison Square Garden on 25/3 was supposed to be “Daniel Bryan Appreciation Night,” however Bryan has been pulled from the show, as well as being removed from some other dates he was scheduled to appear at. Ticket holders for the MSG show were sent a letter with a statement citing a, “scheduling conflict” and were informed that Bryan's Appreciation Night had been postponed. Bryan is also out of WrestleMania weekend, where he was scheduled to appear at Axxess, however now Shawn Michaels will now be replacing him, and he is off the upcoming European tour in April too. The latest on the situation is that WWE officials noted that Bryan had requested time off, which he was granted, however Brie Bella was not at TV this week either and the speculation and gossip mongers went into overdrive with wacky theories about what the real story is. Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet reported on 25/3 that Brie Bella would be retiring “following the RAW after WrestleMania” and noted that Bryan had been pulled from his appearances to do a “health issue.” Satin's report claimed that it is unclear what the issue with Bryan is, but according to his “sources” the “health issue” is the reason why Brie was not at TV this week and a major reason why she is moving her retirement up from the summer to after Mania.

Cubed Circle Newsletter 218 – Back in Business! After the release of the 2015 Cubed Circle Yearbook last week, we return with a more regular edition of the newsletter this week covering the New Japan Tokyo Dome, the departures that followed, the news of the week including NXT signings and injuries, as well as RAW from Monday. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter, Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for January 11th – January 16th 2016. Ben Carass On January 12th New Japan officially stripped Shinsuke Nakamura of the IWGP Intercontinental title. Nakamura was scheduled to defend, and presumably lose, the belt to Kenny Omega on 14/2 at the New Beginning in Niigata after the angle on the New Year's Dash show where Omega pinned Nakamura clean, took control of the Bullet Club and challenged Nakamura to a championship match. While comparisons will be made to Alberto Del Rio not dropping the AAA Mega Heavyweight title before signing with WWE and subsequently being stripped of that title, the situation with Nakamura and Japan is completely different since, as of yet, Nakamura still has not officially signed with the WWE and, unlike Del Rio, will seemingly be allowed to work the remaining dates he has left for New Japan. There's the Fantasticamania tour from 17/1 – 24/1 and after that Nakamura's final dates will be on 29/1 in Tokorozawa, headlined by Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii & Gedo vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto,Katsuyori Shibata & Ryusuke Taguchi and 30/1 at Korakuen Hall with Nakamura, Okada & Ishii vs. Tanahashi, Goto & Shibata in an all-star main event.
