STATE BOARD OF MEDICINE TAKES DISCIPLINARY ACTION

WAKEFIELD: At its meeting yesterday the state Board of Registration in Medicine took disciplinary action against the medical licenses of Dr. Salah Abass, M.D., Alan C. Schold, M.D. and Joel A. Saperstein, M.D.

The Board revoked the right of Dr. Salah Abass to renew his license to practice medicine. The Board found that Dr. Abass engaged in sexual misconduct with two patients, and that he was found guilty in Lawrence District Court of two counts of indecent assault and battery on one of the patients. He also falsely claimed on license renewal applications to have been board certified. Dr. Abass is a 1985 graduate of the University of Alexandria School of Medicine in Egypt. He specializes in Family Medicine and has been licensed in Massachusetts since 2004.

The Board accepted the resignations of the medical licenses of Dr. Joel A. Saperstein and Dr. Alan C. Schold. Resignation is a disciplinary action that permanently removes a physician from practice.

Dr. Saperstein is a 1964 graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and has been licensed in Massachusetts since 1968. Dr. Schold is a 1967 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He is board certified in Anesthesiology and was first licensed in Massachusetts in 2001.

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine licenses more than 40,000 physicians, osteopaths and acupuncturists. The Board was created in 1894 to protect the public health and safety by setting standards for the practice of medicine and ensuring that doctors who practice in the Commonwealth are appropriately qualified and competent. The Board investigates complaints, holds hearings and determines sanctions. More information is available at www.mass.gov/massmedboard.
