Course description: This required junior's course is intended to present information and methods regarding the development and identity of the whole human person in regards to his/her physical, psychological, and spiritual characteristics. This study is conducted in light of contemporary social science, the physical sciences, the Christian tradition, and Catholic doctrine. We will cover the concepts of: 1-the need for relationships and some of the major influences on them, 2-friendship, love, dating, 3-our human sexuality and premarital sexual boundaries, 4-communication and the formation of healthy relationships. Our textbook covers the four vocations: the single or married life, Religious life, and the ordained ministry.
All of Bishop Alemany's School-Wide Learning Results, the SLRs, are carefully attended to in this course. As people enriched by faith, we will pray daily in class and monthly as a school-wide community. The text addresses different prayer experiences and students will explore many of them, and become leaders for some of them. As people prepared intellectually, students will use critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills as they engage in group discussions or complete assignments concerning various relationships as they relate to Church teachings and their own personal conscience development. As people committed to promoting justice and peace, juniors will integrate the concerns and needs of our world today, with their own growing understanding of encouraging and supporting one another, supported by our text and Bible passages of Jesus' teachings. As people characterized by moral courage and conscientious leadership, students will continuously be engaged in discussions that will help them learn respect for themselves and one another, as we explore issues that face young people and their expanding relationship with God and with others who are close to them. As people distinguished by concern for others as demonstrated through... our Corporal Works of Mercy projects that each group will design and implement, focusing on directly helping people in our local communities with their specific needs.
Requirements: 1. Creating a Christian Lifestyle, by Carl Koch, Minnesota: Saint Mary's Press, 1996. 2. Each student will bring their text to class each day, and will also have outside-of-class reading assignments to complete. A majority of the final is based directly on materials from the text. 3. Each student will keep an ongoing collection of personal journals, and although they will be considered private, the teacher will have access to them. 4. Several research and small group presentations will be selected from a list of topics. 5. A small group project on the elements of Preparing for Marriage will be researched, compiled into a program, and presented to the class by all of the individuals in each group. 5. Groups of students will work together, select, and complete a Corporal Works of Mercy Service Project within our community outside of the school.
1 Examinations: 1. Homework and in-class written assignments will show ongoing knowledge. 2. Verbal answers to in-class questions asked by the teacher will also help evaluate each student’s comprehension and will be counted as points towards the final grade totals. 3. Comprehensive evaluative tests will be given throughout the school semester.
Grading: 1. Students will present knowledge of factual information shown by written and scantron test scores at the end of each lesson unit. 2. Content, enthusiasm, and professionalism during individual and group presentations will be significant factors in scoring the rubrics posted for those assignments. 3. Cooperation and thoroughness of requirements for each of the projects: Corporal Works of Mercy, My Busy Single Life, and the Wedding Mass Program, will be assessed based on posted rubrics for each of those assignments. 4. Points will be given for homework assignments, quiz and test grades, projects, and class participation. Students will be kept informed online as to the total number of points that have been possible up to a given point in the grading period. 90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D.
Ms. Moran’s Classroom Guidelines: Follow directions…… Be seated…… and be prepared to work when the bell rings. Failure to do these things will result in notations being made on your class records, two notations will require a detention after class, three will result in an after school detention, and contacting your home for further assistance.
With all due consideration given to the above stated guidelines, the final determination of the student’s grade rests with the professional judgment of the teacher.
THE ALEMANY HONOR CODE WILL BE UPHELD IN THIS COURSE.
