Basic Music Concepts Rhythm Note durations/ value; Pulse and rhythmic alignment; Meter and Measures; Rests; Tempo; Accent; Syncopation Melody High and low pitches; Scales; Intervals; Key; Melody; Melodic Movement; Melodic Contour– includes kind of movement (stepwise, interval leaps, triadic) Harmony Triads/Chords; Chord Progressions and Cadences; Modulations and Transitions; Relationship between harmonic gesture and structure Timbre Instrumental Timbres; Instrument groupings (strings, wind, brass, percussion); Instrument ranges; Instrumental Function; Idiomatic Instrumental Writing Texture Monody; Melody and Accompaniment; Contrapuntal techniques (imitation, canon, fugue) Structure and Form Singlepart forms; Multi-Part Forms, including Binary, Ternary, Rondo, Theme and variations; Beginnings and Endings Style/genre Classical Stylistic Periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary) Popular Styles (Blues, Jazz, Pop, Rock)

2. Musical Materials, Relationships and Manipulations Rhythmic Hierarchies Relationships between note durations and groups of note durations; Rhythmic manipulations; Relationships between individual pitches and groups of pitches; Rhythmic motives and internal rhythmic relationships; Ostinato; Changing Meter; Polyrhythm and phase shifting

Pitch Relationships Scale types and pitch sets; Harmonic implications of pitch groupings Pattern Distinctive or recognizable rhythmic and melodic patterns; Repetition; Variation - techniques for creating variation including augmentation, diminution, inversion, single-note alterations, use of accidentals.

3. High Level Musical Concepts Overall Structure and Form Development and Change – techniques to manage structured change over time. Each curriculum unit is accompanied by extensive sets of examples and partially completed projects realized in the Hyperscore environment along with suggestions for original projects and activities designed to stimulate engagement with core musical concepts while enabling individual creativity and expression.

The Hyperscore Music Curriculum enables students and teachers to meet the MENC guidelines with respect to the core areas of;

Composing and arranging music Reading and notating music. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. Evaluating music and music performances. Understanding music in relation to history and culture
