Halley's Sports Premium Funding Sports Premium Funding is allocated to all schools across the country. The purpose of this funding is to enable pupils to be physically literate; equipped with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary for them to achieve a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
At Halley, we believe that physical education (PE), sports and extra-curricular clubs play an important role in promoting social inclusion, a healthy lifestyle, and self-confidence. All schools have to spend the sports funding on improving their provision for PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how we do it. Our aim is to maintain the quality and quantity of sports and after-school clubs, inter and intra school competitions, as well as to raise opportunities for pupils to try different activities.
At Halley we recognise the contribution that being physically active and engaging in active high-quality PE has to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children. Furthermore, through sports and games, we aim to develop a greater awareness about dangers such as obesity, smoking and other such activities that can have a detrimental impact on pupil health and well-being.
The money Halley receives is used so that all children benefit regardless of their sporting ability. We continue to place a high priority on our PE provision and have invested in the following:-
Purchase of new gymnastics equipment to expand and develop the provision of indoor activities. Purchase of a new outdoor table tennis table, outdoor paddles and balls. Provision of hockey equipment for Key Stage 1 and 2 children. Purchase of a new tennis / badminton / volley ball net. Purchase of a class set of size 3 footballs for Key Stage 1 Opportunities for Years 3 and 4 to have swimming lessons. Provision of extra sports equipment to encourage pupil participation in physical activities at break times:- basketball and rugby balls, hockey equipment, parachutes, skipping ropes, French skipping bands, foxtail balls, and other equipment to encourage group activities and social inclusion. Staff training to develop high quality PE lessons through guidance of specialist sports coaches. Provision of alternative sporting activities such as; judo, street dance. This year Halley has substantially invested in some of the larger items of equipment for PE and playtime activities. We have purchased a new gymnastic suite and lightweight benches. This equipment has been extensively used by children in the younger year groups; developing their upper body strength, spatial awareness, interaction, and coordination. Purchase of athletics and pulse activity equipment that has seen children’s stamina and fitness increase to a stage where they can sustain high-impact vigorous exercise continuously for a longer duration.
The Key Stage 2 playground has been equipped with a new all-weather table tennis table for the Key Stage 2 playground which, since its installation, has been keenly used by all classes. The money has also been used to better equip playtime activities, and this year with the provision of more equipment encouraging varied physical activities at break times there has been greater involvement of boys and girls in sporting activities beyond that of football.
Furthermore, our pupils are keen to participate in more off-site sporting activities: multi skills days, specialised sports activities, competitions with other schools and even district competitions for specific sports. There was genuine excitement and enthusiasm from pupils, parents and staff who experienced our Sports Day at Mile End Stadium.
Deployment and use of specialist coaches during 2015-2016 This year instead of having different coaches each half-term we have changed our timetable so that each class has a whole term. Although this means that each class has exposure to fewer activities, it does mean that each activity is explored at a much deeper level, enriching the students experience and understanding of each sport.
