Study Strategies that may be tried to assist in learning: 1. Read/study notes orally (read out loud to yourself) 2. Form study groups or seek a person in each class to study with 3. Use graphic organizers, visuals and/or highlighters for notes and reading material (Use a different color for each new concept). 4. Sit in front of class near instructor and board. 5. Before reading a chapter in a textbook, make a preview outline by using chapter headings and subheadings.

Time Management 1. Chunk study intervals into short blocks of time (i.e. 20 min. – take a break – 20 min. instead of a full straight hr. of study). 2. Make appointments with instructors to ask for advice or learning tips as needed, or go to the instructors’ office hours. 3. Schedule your classes each semester with your best study times in mind (are you a better learner in the early morning, should you take night classes, etc.)

Skill Development 1. Make study/flashcards (3x5) cards to assist in memorization. Write questions or problems on one side and answers on the back side. 2.Take basic skill classes or Personal Growth/Development classes. 3. Break down the information to be learned into steps and put the steps on flashcards. Study the information by placing the cards in the correct order. For example: place each step to solving a math problem onto a card. Then place cards in the proper order, verbalizing the problem, step-by-step, before trying similar type problems. 4. Use the Writing Center on campus to get assistance with writing assignments. Technology Application 1. Use a Franklin Language Master/Spell Checker/Dictionary. 2. Computer lab: Explore our campus computer lab for computer assisted instruction software to practice basic skills. 3. Invest in a calculator. 4. Tape record lectures to allow you to take notes on your own time and to allow yourself to hear the information again at your leisure.
