1 [3624-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOR ITS MANY 12 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND TO DECLARE MARCH 12, 2003, 13 AS “SPARTANBURG COUNTY DAY” IN SOUTH 14 CAROLINA. 15 16 Whereas, the population of Spartanburg County has grown over 17 ten percent during the ten years between 1990 and 2000, with 18 census figures going from 226,800 in 1990 to an estimated 19 253,791 in 2000. In 2001 the census figure rose another 3,470 to 20 257,261, and additional population growth is expected for 2002 21 and this year; and 22 23 Whereas, Spartanburg County is the home of BMW 24 Manufacturing Corporation which began production at its first 25 North American assembly plant in Spartanburg in September 1994 26 and from which the famous Z4 Roadster and X5 Sports Activity 27 Vehicle is manufactured and distributed; and 28 29 Whereas, Spartanburg County is the home to more than one 30 hundred other international firms representing sixteen countries 31 and is noteworthy as having the highest per capita international 32 investment of any area in the country; and 33 34 Whereas, more than five hundred manufacturing firms call 35 Spartanburg County home; the county has diversified its economy 36 beyond the textile industry to add automotive and 37 automotive-related industry, food processing and packaging, metal 38 working, and stamping among its wide array of industries; and 39 40 Whereas, Spartanburg County is also the headquarters of Denny’s, 41 Extended Stay America, Advance America, and QS1; and 42

1 [3624] 1 1 Whereas, Spartanburg County is South Carolina’s “melting pot”, 2 blending Southern culture with dashes and dollops of German, 3 Swiss, Japanese, Indian, Asian, British, and a myriad of other 4 influences which create a population center filled with cultural and 5 international diversity; and 6 7 Whereas, Spartanburg County offers an excellent environment for 8 working, living, and playing; it has a county council with six 9 members elected from single-member districts and a chairman 10 elected at large; its largest city is Spartanburg with a population of 11 over fifty thousand, and the county is home to thirteen other 12 municipalities with their own elected councils and mayors; and 13 14 Whereas, Spartanburg County offers excellent educational 15 opportunities for all of its citizens; it has forty-one public 16 elementary schools, fourteen public middle or junior high schools, 17 nine public high schools, four private schools, and three vocational 18 schools; the colleges and universities located within the county 19 borders include Converse College, Sherman College of Straight 20 Chiropractic, Spartanburg Methodist College, Spartanburg 21 Technical College, Wofford College, and the University of South 22 Carolina-Spartanburg; the South Carolina School for the Deaf and 23 the Blind and the Charles Lea Center also serve the state’s citizens 24 from their Spartanburg County locations; and 25 26 Whereas, Wofford College in Spartanburg County is the home of 27 the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers Training Camp; 28 and 29 30 Whereas, Spartanburg County is the proud home of the “Miss 31 South Carolina Pageant” held in July of every year; and 32 33 Whereas, Spartanburg County enjoys thirty-five parks, five golf 34 courses, historical sites, and many other cultural and recreational 35 opportunities. Now, therefore, 36 37 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 38 concurring: 39 40 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly hereby 41 recognize Spartanburg County for its many accomplishments and 42 declare March 12, 2003, as “Spartanburg County Day” in South 43 Carolina.
