JOB DESCRIPTION Public Health Dietitian Public & Population Health

Position Title: Public Health Dietitian

Organisation Unit: Healthy Lifestyles Team Public & Population Health Child, Youth, Maternal, Public and Oral Health

Location: Whangarei, Northland District Health Board

Responsible to: Team Leader Healthy Lifestyles Public & Population Health Child, Youth, Maternal, Public and Oral Health Northland District Health Board

Primary Functions of Responsible for the effective delivery of health promotion the Position: programmes with a focus on nutrition and reducing health inequalities in Northland.

Functional Relationships The Public Health Dietitian will develop and maintain excellent relationships with:

 Northland District Health Board staff  Maori health providers especially:  Sport Northland - Service Development & Funding:  Te Hotu Manawa Maori HEHA  National Heart Foundation - Clinical Dietitians  Agencies for Nutrition Action - Public Health Unit  NZ Plunket Society  PHO’s

 Cancer Society

The position of Public Dietitian encompasses the following major functions or key result areas:

 Plan, implement, evaluate and participate in Public Health nutrition initiatives consistent with: o Continuing Competency Requirements o Treaty of Waitangi o Occupational Health and Safety Standards

The outcome requirements of the above key responsibility areas are outlined below:

Treaty of Waitangi  Contribute to the promotion of the principles of Treaty of Waitangi and the involvement of Maori within the decision making process for their health and independence, within District Health Board management processes and procedures  Include the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi within all aspects of the role and its outcomes  Ensure that consultation and engagement processes include appropriate mechanisms to meet the need of Maori in a culturally appropriate and safe manner  Attend the Northland District Health Board Treaty of Waitangi Training

Health & Safety  Ensure compliance with designated responsibilities detailed in Northland District Health Board’s Health and Safety Policy  Promote an environment of physical, occupational, cultural, ethical and legal safety  Observe safe work practices, rules and instructions relating to work, and be pro-active in hazard management  Willingly co-operate in the achievement of all health and safety goals and initiatives by:  Practising and observing safe work methods;  The use of safety equipment;  Reporting unsafe conditions or equipment; and  Reporting and documenting all accidents or incidents  Attend Good Stuff Day

Duties and responsibilities can be amended from time to time either by additional, deletion or straight amendment by the Manager, Public & Population Health to meet any changing conditions. Education and Qualifications

Essential Desirable  New Zealand Registered Dietitian  Post-graduate qualification in community  Experience in working within a health nutrition promotion framework  Post graduate qualification in Public  Hold current driver’s licence Health  Qualifications in sport and exercise science

Experience

Essential Desirable  Ability to travel away over night  Experience in working within a health  Flexibility to work within a changing work promotion environment  Experience in clinical dietetics  Experience working with Tai Tokerau Iwi  Ability to work towards a service plan and Maori communities  Outcome focused and team player

Awareness and Understanding of

Essential Desirable  The Treaty of Waitangi and its application  Health and Disability Commissioner to the health setting (Code of Health and Disability Services  Maori Health Models such as Te Whare Consumers’ Rights) Regulations (1996) Tapa Wha, Te Paemahutonga  New Zealand Council of Healthcare  Familiarity the Ottawa Charter Standards  Privacy Act (1993) and Health Information Privacy Code (1994)  Health and Safety in Employment Act (1992) Skills & Personal Attributes

Skills  Dynamic, creative and able to present nutrition information in innovative ways  Able to demonstrate significant initiative and proactively seek solutions to nutrition-& physical activity- related public health challenges  Highly developed communication skills, both oral and written.  A sound understanding of the health needs of Northlanders.  An understanding of the socio-political environment influencing health care.  Commitment to reducing health outcome inequalities  An ability to form and maintain strong links with all other appropriate stakeholders.  Ability to work within a team but also work unsupervised.  Ability to work within a budget.  Ability to understand and work under the terms of a contract/programme.  Ability to produce comprehensive reports on outputs within given time restraints.  Effective planning, organisation and evaluation skills.

Performance Development Review An initial review of performance will be conducted after three months, with an annual review thereafter.

An individual Development Plan will be developed to reflect the contribution this position is expected to make towards achieving the team’s objectives and measures. Key result areas will be developed and agreed at this time.
