ACTIVITY WRITE UP NO. 1 AND 2-Individual Assignments

Equipment/supplies White T-shirt (or any piece of white clothing), rubber bands, dye, plastic trash bag (to store dyed shirts), gloves, soda ash, bucket of cold water Facilities required/environment Area with a sink, enough space to layout shirt or outside, washer, dryer, place to hang shirt Precautions Wear gloves and old clothing and cover area. Dye can stain skin and clothing.
Sequence/Directions (Details of how a to move through the activity from start to finish)
1. Get a white T-shirt (or any white piece of clothing) and think of the colors and design that you want.
2. Get a bucket of water, pour soda ash into it, and mix. Dunk the white T-shirt in the bucket.
3. Take the shirt out and wring it. For a spiral design, lay the shirt on a flat surface.
4. Pinch the middle of the shirt with your index finger and thumb then carefully start spinning it until the shirt forms a circle.
5. Pat in the loose material on the sides to make a tight circle.
6. Use 4 to 5 rubber bands about an inch apart and wrap them around the shirt having them cross at the center. Make sure all material is packed tightly within the rubber bands.
7. Then, take the colors of dye that you want. (*I chose to use a tie-dye kit where the dye is already in bottles. Fill these bottles with water to the fill line and shake rigorously.)
8. Carefully cover your work area with plastic trash bags or work outside in an open area.
1 9. The shirt should be divided into wedges by the rubber bands. Take one color of dye that you picked and saturate a section/wedge with that color. Continue saturating the wedges with all of the colors. Make sure to wear plastic gloves to prevent staining of your hands.
10. Flip the shirt over and repeat on the other side. Make sure to dye between folds or flaps of the t- shirt so no white shows.
11. Store the shirt in a plastic bag for 12 to 24 hours.
12. After that time, remove the shirt from the bag and take off the rubber bands by cutting them off with scissors and put on a new pair of gloves. Rinse the shirt, wringing out excess dye, until the water runs clear.
13. Place the T-shirt in the washer with a small amount of detergent, then dry and wear!
