Rapid Protected Area Feasibility Awards

Rapid Protected Area Feasibility Awards

About Rainforest Trust Rainforest Trust works with local partner organizations to create new protected areas for the most threatened species across the tropics. We are seeking new conservation partners that are committed to establishing and/or expanding Protected Areas for Critically Endangered and Endangered species (based on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species).

Rainforest Trust’s Rapid Protected Area Feasibility Awards Rainforest Trust is awarding support of an average $5,000 USD for protected area feasibility studies around the world..

Rainforest Trust’s Rapid Protected Area Feasibility Awards support projects that investigate:  the presence or abundance of Critically Endangered (CR) or Endangered (EN) species in unprotected sites by conducting rapid biological surveys  assess community interest in protection and government interest in declaring or expanding protected areas  land tenure (ownership) where threatened (CR and EN) species are found  property prices in key areas and property owner willingness to sell.

Successful applications will show that the work proposed has clear potential to lead to the creation of a new Protected Area. Project sites must contain IUCN Red List CR or EN species for which the primary threat is habitat loss. Priority acceptance will be given to studies within the tropics that exclude the top 50 wealthiest nations.

Award applications will be reviewed within one month of being received. Up to 25 awards will be given each year.

After the completion of a successful feasibility study, submission of full Protected Area creation proposals to Rainforest Trust will be encouraged. Please complete this form and submit to [email protected] in Microsoft Word format (pdf not accepted). Please limit each response to 250 words unless stated otherwise. 1. Please include estimates (if available) of the population sizes of the most important species in the area. The proposal will NOT be considered if Critically Endangered (CR) or Endangered (EN) species are not found in the area.

Additional Information: (Please send files as attachments together with this form)  REQUIRED: Please submit a map that shows where the feasibility study will be undertaken. Suitable map formats are KMZ/KML (Google Earth) OR shapefile (ArcGIS) format. Ideally, the potential new Protected Area should be indicated on the map. Alternatively, GPS coordinates of proposed study sites can be given.  Conservation or biodiversity reports of the project site (if available). For example, maps showing points where threatened species occur strengthen applications.
