[RN 01/16] Membership to the Board of Governors Higher Education Representation
Central School of Ballet Background Central School of Ballet is a vibrant, leading international institution particularly recognised for the strength of and continued commitment to its founding ethos of offering students a very different experience of ballet and dance training; namely, an education that values individual artistic development at its heart. A school of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, a government funded specialist Higher Education Institute, Central is the only UK ballet school of its calibre to offer a two year Foundation Degree leading to a one year BA (Hons) top-up Degree in Professional Dance and Performance and also an MA Choreography, all validated by the University of Kent.
A key, and distinctive, element of the BA (Hons) Degree is Ballet Central, a company that tours extensively each year across the UK to paying public audiences. The wealth and breadth of experience this offers Central’s students is widely acknowledged across the professional dance sector in terms of developing artistically confident and mature dancers, readily employable as they embark upon challenging yet hugely rewarding careers. Central also offers a number of ancillary programmes with its Associate School which incorporates various strands of dance education for younger pupils, as well as a further range of programmes and projects offering the experience of dance as a creative and educational outlet to a diverse range of community groups that may otherwise be denied access to dance.
Membership to the Board of Governors Higher Education Representation The Board of Governors is strongly populated with a broad range of skill sets and representation across core organisational needs to ensure the Central’s continued development and sustainability in challenging times. The Board is fully supported by a highly dedicated Senior Management Team. Effective governance is embedded throughout the organisation, and the fresh challenges presented by external frameworks are fully acknowledged. Collectively, the Board possesses very strong knowledge of the HE framework and practices; however, the Board is looking to appoint a member directly from the HE sector.
The ideal candidate will have a background in quality assurance within Higher Education or have worked at a high level within the university sector for a number of years. Enthusiasm and interest in the arts is also essential. In addition, we are looking for the individual to make a positive contribution as a fully participating member of the Board providing constructive challenge as Central moves forward as well as acting as an ambassador in attending performances and events, including for cultivation and fundraising purposes.
The post is unremunerated and runs for an initial term of three years. Meetings, generally four per academic year, are held in central London. The Terms of Reference for the Board of Governors are available upon request.
