VIDEO WORKSHEET / Notes to the Teacher

. Play the video segment about Native American cultural areas after you introduce the unit theme, Journeys of Discovery. Before viewing, distribute copies of a map of North America. Next, discuss the geographic conditions of the following areas while pointing out their locations on the map: 1. Alaska (Arctic), 2. California area (lush landscape) bordered by the Pacific ocean, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the redwood forests to the north, 3. Great Basin Area (flat and high temperatures) around Death Valley, 4. Northeast (woodland forests) from the eastern seaboard of Canada through the Great Lakes and into parts of the Midwest, 5. the Northwest (mild climate with forests of large trees) from the north of California (150 miles wide and 2000 miles long), and 5. the Great Plains (flat, grassy) following the mid-section of the country. In preparation for the video, ask students to make a two-column list. In the first column, have students write the names of the different Native American cultural areas as discussed in the video. Each name should be on a different line. In the second column, students will write the different ways each Native American culture group lived (hunting, fishing, etc.). After viewing, discuss with the students how the geographic region determined each culture group’s lifestyle.

. When the class has completed the Review and Practice section in Part 1 (page 13 of the Student Book), review the video. Distribute the Unit 1 Worksheet. Have the students complete the True/False section and then check the answers as a group. Collect the worksheets.

. Show the video one final time, after the students complete Part 1 Review on page 21 of the Student Book. Redistribute the worksheets prior to showing the video. Have the students complete the Short Answer section of the worksheet, and then have them discuss the answers in small groups.

The Great Basin Culture Area has summer temperatures that reach 140 degrees and is extremely dry. 3. They modeled the new American government after the Iroquois form of government. The Iroquois called their form of government the Iroquois league. 4. The Plains Culture Area is the easiest to recognize thanks in part to its portrayal in movies and television adventures with natives riding their horses across the prairie. 5. The horse allowed the natives in the Plains Culture Area to improve their lifestyle. The natives could travel large distances more quickly, allowing them to more easily trade with other tribes. The horse established the natives’ nomadic lifestyle of hunting buffalo.
