Notice of Extraordinary General Meeting/Luncheon Talk

An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) and a luncheon talk sponsored by Oxford University Press will be held on 11 September 2004 (Sat) at 12:30 p.m. at the World Trade Centre Club, 38/F World Trade Centre, 280 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. The programme is as follows:

12:30 p.m. Buffet lunch 1:45 p.m. EGM 2:00 p.m. Talk by Prof. Chung Ling

All members are cordially invited to come to the EGM. Only Ordinary Members, Life Members and Fellows have the right to vote. The agenda of the EGM is as follows:

1. To pass a special resolution on proposed amendments of the Articles of Association of the Hong Kong Translation Society as attached; 2. Any other business.

Oxford University Press Translation Luncheon Talk

The Society is honored to have Prof. Chung Ling 鍾玲 speak on “How was Gary Snyder’s Translation of Han Shan’s Poetry Canonized in the West?” in English and Mandarin.

Prof. Chung Ling received her Ph.D. from the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is currently Chair Professor and Dean of Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her research areas include East-West Literary Relations, American Poetry, Taiwanese Literature and Women's Literature. Her major publications include Muses of Modern China: A Critical Study on the Works of Taiwan Women Poets (1989), Linking Publishing Company, which received the National Literature and Arts Award of the Administrative Yuan, American Poetry and Chinese Dream: Chinese Cultural Modes in Modern American Verses, Rye-Field Publishing Company (simplified character version published by Guangxi Normal UP), which received the Chung-Cheng

2 Cultural Award of the Chinese Cultural Revival Movement Association (1998) and

Gary Snyder and Asian Cultures: A Paradigm of How the West Fuses Oriental Traditions (2003), Linking Publishing Company. She collaborated with American poet Kenneth Rexroth in translating Orchid Boat: Woman Poets of China (1972), McGraw-Hill Companies and New Directions, and Li Ch'ing-chao: Complete Poems (1979), New Directions. Her articles include "Allusions in Gary Snyder's 'The Canyon Wren'", Connotations 12.1 (2002/03) and "Snyder's Translation of Han Shan Poems", Chung Wai Literary Monthly, May 1990, etc. She has also published 13 books of short stories, poetry and prose in Chinese.

Buffet Lunch

The charge for the famous buffet lunch of the World Trade Center Club is only HK$100 ($150 for non-members). Members who wish to take part in the luncheon talk can email ([email protected]) or fax the reply slip below to the Hon. Sec. on or before 6 August 2004 (no need for nil reply).

3 Notice of Extraordinary General Meeting THE HONG KONG TRANSLATION SOCIETY LIMITED (“Society”)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Society will be held at World Trade Center Club , 38/F World Trade Centre, 280 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong on 11 September 2004 (Sat) at 12:30 p.m. for the purpose of considering and if thought fit, passing the following resolution as a Special Resolution:

THAT the Articles of Association of the Society be amended in the following manner-

I. Clause 18 of the Article of Association be deleted in its entirety and be replaced by the following clause: “18. The Committee shall have full power to manage and operate the business and affairs of the Society. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Committee shall have full power: (1) to appoint Sub-committees for special purposes with such power as the Committee may prescribe and to dissolve them; (2) to delegate any of the functions of the Committee in such manner as the Committee may see fit; (3) to engage professional advice and services in connection with the business and affairs of the Society as the Committee may see fit; (4) to grant honors, titles and awards to such persons, organizations or corporations whom the Committee shall determine have made a significant contribution to the Society or its causes including without limitation: (i) the title of President Emeritus to past or retired Presidents; (ii) the title of Honorary Adviser to such Members and non- Members for significant contribution to the Society or its causes; (iii) such honorary titles as the Committee may see fit for such Members and Non-Members who have made donations to the Society or its causes; and (5) to make, cancel and alter rules and regulations in relation to any of the above.

4 II. The sentence “The number of Honorary Fellows elected each year shall not exceed three” be deleted from Clause 4(7) of the Articles of Association.

III. The words “5. Membership Secretary” be added immediately below “4. Honorary Treasurer” and the numbering for “Edition for Bulletin” be changed from “5” to “6” in Clause 14 of Articles of Association.

IV. The following Clause 47 be added after Clause 46 of the Articles of Association: “47. For those Members who have provided their fax numbers or e-mail addresses to the Society, any notice may be given by the Society to them by fax or by e-mail at those numbers or addresses so provided. Such notice shall be deemed to be effected immediately upon completion of transmission.”
