GPs to ‘prescribe’ apps for patients in Yorkshire and the Humber

People across Yorkshire and Humber could soon be directed to free or cheap apps by their GPs to allow them to monitor and manage their health more effectively.

2 The latest innovations in smartphone technology will help patients and the public to find and use NHS services, manage conditions and make better lifestyle choices in a way that is very convenient for them.

It follows a competition to find apps with potentially huge value to patients and the NHS that promote better management of long-term conditions or healthy living.

Amongst the most popular entries were:

 The NHS Yorkshire and the Humber Choose Well app, which features details of each and every health service across the region - including contact information, GPS location and more - all at the touch of a button.  The service finder makes finding a GP, dentist, pharmacist, hospital, family planning clinic or walk-in centre, easy. The application also features an interactive calendar with appointment and medication reminders. It also contains first aid advice as well as a handy 'emergency' feature which gives those around you all the details they need to help you if you find yourself in need of medical help. It currently has 5,000 users.

Other app ideas highlighted were:  To help manage long-term conditions like diabetes.  To help people deal with post-traumatic stress.  To track and monitor things like blood pressure.  To help people find NHS services on a map.  To get practical information about keeping fit and eating healthily.

The government is in the process of developing the information strategy to ensure that patients and clinicians have access to meaningful and up-to-date information. This will give patients more choice, control and responsibility over their health and clinicians the information to manage how they deliver local services. The strategy is expected to be published in spring 2012. iPhone app launched to help people manage chronic condition

ActiveME©, a new iPhone application, has been developed to help patients with chronic fatigue syndrome/ME (CFS/ME).

Developed by experts in the field of CFS/ME, and tested by people with the condition, this new app is designed to assist patients in keeping track of their activity levels, a key part of rehabilitation and self-managing this chronic condition.

CFS/ME affects approximately four in every 1,000 people in the UK. The condition is common in children affecting at least 1% of teenagers, and is arguably the most common cause of long- term absence from school.

The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD) NHS Foundation Trust, the Northern CFS/ME Clinical Network and Indigo Mulitimedia have teamed up to utilise modern technology as a tool to help these patients, who often find themselves in ‘boom and bust’ energy cycles.

Find out more about the app in the press release below.

South Tees summary care record case study

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust started viewing summary care records (SCRs) in their medical assessment units in May 2011. This new case study looks at how hospital staff manage and monitor access to patients' SCRs, whilst ensuring the strictest security standards to protect patient information.

Find out how your organisation can view the summary care record

Guidance for organisations wishing to view summary care records (SCRs) is available on the SCR website. The guidance includes an implementation guide and details of the viewing systems available.

It looks at information governance, project manager guidance, examples of viewing systems in different healthcare settings and shares benefits and lessons learned from sites who are already viewing the SCR.

Click here to find out more on SCR viewing.

Summary care record interviews

Radio Four’s Inside Health programme broadcast on 15 February 2012, featured an interview with Dr Gillian Braunold, SCR clinical director. Dr Braunold discusses the benefits of using the SCR for medicines reconciliation, out of hours care and enriched records at the patient request.

Listen to the interview on the BBC iPlayer.

A further interview with Dr Braunold on SCR is available on the Pulse website.

SystmOne goes live at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at their hospice in Sheffield. In conjunction with Rotherham Specialist Palliative Care Services, Bluebell Wood is the first Children’s Hospice to go live with SystmOne.

Benefits include clinical staff being able to see a whole patient record at the touch of a button, allowing more staff to see the whole picture. Clinicians can obtain a full set of patient records, providing greater clinical safety and a safer patient record.

Peter Clarkson, clinical it systems specialist and IT project manager at NHS Rotherham, explains that it was a logical step to move onto the system. Peter says: “SystmOne gives us a more complete patient record with more elements being captured electronically than on paper or legacy systems. It’s simply a more rounded system.”

4 Although the hospice says it’s still early days, they’re excited about the potential of SystmOne and feedback so far from users is that it’s been a positive experience.

Madeleine Odale, marketing manager at the Hospice, said: “Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice implemented SystmOne in October 2011. Whilst it is still early days, we anticipate that the system will allow us to streamline many of our processes in the future. Already, we have found that SystmOne gives us easy access to valuable information on the children registered with us, and their interaction with other services and professionals.”

Peter found it a remarkable experience implementing the project at the hospice. “I and my IT team who went out to the hospice were very moved by the incredible environment the hospice provides. I take my hat off to everyone who works there - the staff are fantastic and there is no praise high enough for the work they do. It was an unforgettable experience.”

New site to take you inside government

A new test version of a single website for government was made live today [02 March 2012]. ‘Inside government’ is the corporate platform that will be for specialists seeking a ‘behind the scenes’ look at what the government is doing as opposed to the front-facing service the government provides for citizens.

Are you ready for the ICD-10 fourth edition deadline?

NHS organisations are reminded to ensure ICT and finance departments are working with their IT system suppliers to update their systems with the changes to the clinical classification ICD- 10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems) in readiness for the implementation of ICD-10 4th Edition on 1 April 2012.

The Information Standards Board issued a formal notice to the NHS and system suppliers in August 2011 following the advance notice issued in April 2011 so teams should already be aware of the deadline.

All ICD-10 4th Edition data files and associated training materials for clinical coding teams can be downloaded free, from the technology reference data update distribution website (TRUD). The government white paper – Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS, reported a commitment to ICD-10 changes for NHS implementation on 1 April 2012 to support quality improvements. The national NHS Classifications Service provides the national products and services to support the use of the ICD-10 classification for UK government purposes.

The UK has a mandatory obligation to collect and submit data to the World Health Organisation using ICD-10. This data is used for epidemiology, research, operational and strategic planning, performance management and payment by results as well as providing information for key health initiatives.
