The undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets, which numbers nearly 2000, represents almost every state in the union and thirteen foreign countries. Throughout its history, The Citadel’s primary purpose has been to educate undergraduates through its Corps of Cadets and prepare them for postgraduate positions of leadership through academic programs of recognized excellence supported by the best features of a structured military environment. The cadet lifestyle provides an environment that supports the growth and development of character, physical fitness, and moral and spiritual principles. All cadets participate in one of the ROTC programs—Army, Air Force, or Naval/Marine Corps. Participation does not require students to accept a commission or be committed to active military duty.

A complementary mission of The Citadel is realized through the College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS), which serves 1,500 civilian evening students through both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the application and utilization of research, and a broad range of professional development opportunities.

A member of NCAA Division I (football 1-AA) and the Southern Conference, The Citadel fields 11 intercollegiate athletic teams and offers 16 club sports. The college is located on a 130-acre campus in historic Charleston, the center of a metropolitan area of 300,000.

As the college’s chief academic officer and chief operating officer, the Provost provides leadership in all academic areas, including curriculum and instruction, research and scholarly activity, accreditation, admissions and financial aid, and academic support services. The Provost is responsible for ensuring the primacy of academics in the college while respecting its traditions and the military environment that supports the education of the whole person. The Provost serves as Acting President and chief executive in the President’s absence. Further, the Provost collaborates with the President and others in legislative relations and fundraising, and the Provost coordinates institution-level decisions and policies involving planning, personnel, finance, facilities, communications, and student activities with senior staff before they are acted upon by the President.
