(a) How this program or project fits the purposes of Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission Grant Program vision statement:

The program being proposed will fit the purposes of the KBBCGP by:

(1) Educating children and their parents in matters pertaining to bicycle and pedestrian safety by involving them in a hands-on training event where the children will be involved in learning to do bicycle safety checks, the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet and the importance of following the rules of bicycle and pedestrian safety.

(2) Educating children and their parents concerning the health benefits of bicycling. OLBH will soon be launching a new community outreach initiative, Kentucky Healthy Choices (KHC), which will emphasize the importance of eating healthy foods and being active. Realizing that exercise and nutrition go hand, children and their parents attending the bicycle camp will be made aware of the importance of diet and exercise by incorporating educational tools from KHC.

(b) Is this a new project or program or a continuation of an existing one?

The 2016 Bicycle Safety Camp was a huge success and plans call for the continuation of the same venue and format with very few changes. The Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant has made it possible for the OLBH camp to continue and thrive when many funding sources have decreased greatly in view of the current economy.

(c) Who will be responsible for the project or program?

OLBH will be the primary sponsor of the event and employees, who have been involved with the existing event, will be responsible for planning, organizing and staging the 2016 bicycle camp. A number of community agencies and businesses will also offer their specific expertise to the project.

Marketing for the program, to assist with attendance, will be provided by the Marketing Department of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital providing newspaper advertising along with colorful flyers for distribution to local schools and throughout the community. The OLBH website, www.olbh.com, will have the information along with OLBH Facebook and Twitter.

(d) Is the request is for a onetime project or for an ongoing program?

The request for funding is for an ongoing program.

(e) Describe the system(s) to be put in place to measure the results of the program.

The following methods will be used to measure results:

(1) Attendance (2) Informal evaluation by staff/volunteers during the event (3) A formal follow-up evaluation meeting of staff/volunteers Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Foundation
