Through the study of chemistry, learners are given the opportunity to explore and understand the natural world and to become aware of the profound influence it has in their lives. Students will describe chemical reactions of organic compounds. Students will determine and interpret energy changes in chemical reactions. Students will explain and communicate energy changes in chemical reactions. Students will explain the nature of oxidation-reduction reactions. Students will apply the principles of oxidation-reduction to electrochemical cells. Students will explain that there is a balance of opposing reactions in chemical equilibrium systems. Students will determine quantitative relationships in simple equilibrium systems.
Marks Breakdown Course 50 % Assignments/Labs – 10% Quizzes – 10% Unit Exams – 20% Final Exam – 10% Diploma 50% Total 100% Classroom Expectations: [CHEMISTRY 30 COURSE OUTLINE] Fall 2013 INNISFAIL HIGH SCHOOL Students are expected to come to class ON TIME and PREPARED for each class. Students will need to have a calculator (graphing preferably), binder with paper to keep notes and handouts, textbook. Calculators cannot be shared during exams or quizzes so it is very important that each student has their own. Students MUST take notes and ATTEND class to be successful in this course. The pace of the course is very fast therefore absences will decrease the likelihood of success. If a student must be absent from class, it is the students RESPONSIBILITY to make up missed work and get any notes or handouts that were given that day. Students MUST be responsible for their own learning and if they are having difficulty with a topic, should seek extra help. If a student misses a quiz or exam the reason must be appropriate and excused. Assignments and labs will assigned throughout the course and MUST be handed at the beginning of class on the date they are due. Assignments are to be handed in at the beginning of the stated class, assignments submitted within 2 days of the due date will receive no penalty. Following that the student may be assessed a late penalty up to 50%. If the assignment is more all assignments for that unit must be completed within one week of following the Unit Exam. Any assignments received after this date will be accepted but will receive no mark. Corrections to assignments will be accepted for 2 days following the return of an assignment for some marks. Students are EXCPECTED to complete all assignments and labs in order to achieve completion of all course objectives. This is an academic course that will REQUIRE approximately 30-60 minutes of homework a night. Students that complete their assignments before class is over are expected to review their notes. This classroom is a place of LEARNING and no student behaviour that DISRUPTS the learning of others will be TOLERATED. FIRST offences will have a student/teacher conference. SECOND offences will have a phone call made to parents/guardians. THIRD offences or SERIOUS offences will be taken to administration. Corrections to assignments will be accepted for 2 days following the return of an assignment for some marks. Unit exams MAY NOT be re-written. Chemistry labs must be completed in a SAFE manner. Any student that is not following proper safety procedures WILL NOT be allowed to complete the lab. All school policies apply. Any student that has questions or concerns regarding these expectations should direct them to the teacher. It is the teacher’s responsibility to provide a safe and engaging learning environment for students to acquire the knowledge and skills of this course.
