Course Description: Criteria for analysis and evaluation of children’s literature in terms of interests, needs, and abilities of children.

Course Objectives:

The student will: 1. Become competent in the identification, selection, and assessment of books in the various literary genres. FEAP/PEC 1, 5, 7, 8; NCTE 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 11; FSAC -EE 4; ACEI 1, 2.1, 2.5, 3.1, 3.2, 4. (Textbook reading /classroom discussions, reading response project, shared reading presentation and storytelling)

2. Relate the selection of literature to the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and aesthetic needs of students. Conduct an in-depth look at an author or illustrator of your choice. Present the information to your peers in a format that would encourage elementary students to learn more about this person and become motivated to explore their books.

2. Reading Response Project (FEAP 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 ; ESOL 5, 6, 15, 16, 17, 21) Students will prepare a reading response project that reflects knowledge of books including Newbery and Caldecott award winners, from each of the literary genres. Knowledge of classroom usability, ESOL accommodations, and personal comments about the text and illustrations are to be included.

3. Shared Literature Presentation (FEAP 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10; ESOL 5, 6, 11, 15, 16, 18, 21)

Choose a book that you think is of excellent quality and appropriate for reading aloud in a public school. Read it to your peers in the class. Self evaluate your reading according to the guidelines provided and ask your audience to evaluate you, too.

4. Storytelling (FEAP 2, 4, 5, 7, 9; ESOL 5, 6, 11, 15, 16, 18) Using a visual aid that is appropriate for the book you have selected, tell your story to your classmates. The story needs to be told, not read. Examples of visuals might include puppets, a feltboard, slides, transparencies, black light demonstrations, charts, costumes, etc. Be creative! Or… You may write and illustrate a children’s book. It must be submitted in final form and will be read to the class during the storytelling presentations. Or … You may propose a project of your own.
