ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS:  Main PhD project on the role of neuroimaging, including TSPO PET, in predicting response to treatment in multiple sclerosis.  Audit on natalizumab experience at Imperial, and early markers of predicting response to treatment.  Audit on JCV antibody testing at Imperial, and longitudinal change in titres.  Research survey on putative link between family history of multiple sclerosis and CNS infections. Currently going through ethics approval.  Validating MSIS-29 questionnaire, and its role in predicting clinical outcomes in multiple sclerosis in large patient cohort.  Supervising student conducting research into pathways for formative care in multiple sclerosis.  Designing computerised tool for data collection in multiple sclerosis as part of OPTIMISE consortium, with Professor Paul Matthews.  Created resource at Imperial College NHS Trust whereby all CSF samples collected for clinical reasons in Neurology Patient Investigation Unit, are also processed and stored in research facility for future research.  van der Star BJ, Raffel J. ACADEMIC TEACHING: 2015 Supervised Masters student for 8-week internship, using immunohistochemistry to investigate the phenotype of microglia in different multiple sclerosis lesions. 2015 Supervised medical student for 10-week BSc project, investigating the use of formative care in multiple sclerosis, and developing predictive models for who may benefit from these pathways. 2014 Supervised medical student for 10-week BSc project, investigating the MSIS-29 questionnaire in multiple sclerosis, and its role in predicting clinical outcomes and monitoring disease activity prospectively. 2009-2010 Promoted to position of “Clinical Lecturer” at St Anne’s College, Oxford University. 2006-2010 Neuroscience Tutor, St. Anne’s College, Oxford University. Tutoring 2nd year medical student in topic such as ‘vision’, ‘audition’, ‘posture’, ‘depression’, ‘schizophrenia’, ‘Parkinson’s disease’, ‘speech’ and ‘long-term potentiation’. In total, I have given over 50 tutorials. 2005 Oxbridge Cultural Exchange Project charity program - English Teacher in rural China (July 10 th – August 25th). PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 2014 Contributing reviewer for Expert Opinion On Drug Metabolism and Toxicology journal. 2012-2013 Lead SHO and rota coordinator for cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital. Redesigned rota to increase continuity of care on ward. 2011-2012 6 months as a Neurology SHO at Charing Cross Hospital. Performed over 120 lumbar punctures. 2010-2011 8 months on “acute stroke rota” at Royal London Hospital, whereby I clerked all stroke admissions, evaluated for thrombolysis (with consultant telecommunication support) and administered thrombolysis. 2010- Trained and employed as a “blinded assessing physician” for Camms 323, 324, and 03409 Phase 3 randomised controlled trials for patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. I perform blinded EDSS and MSFC neurological examinations on study patients. 2009 Medical School elective: 4 weeks Subinternship in Clinical Neurology, working with Dr David Zee, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. 5 weeks practising general medicine and surgery in rural Vanuatu (South Pacific island). 2004 10 weeks Tzedek Charity Volunteer at the Shekhinah Clinic Hospital in Tamale, Ghana. PROFESSIONAL SERVICE: 2007-2008 Part of three-person executive committee that organised national 2-day Medsin Global Health Conference 2008. We attracted over 60 expert national and international speakers, and 430 conference delegates. 2005-2006 Conductor of the St. Anne’s & St. John’s College Orchestra, Oxford. This involved leading weekly rehearsals with the 45-person orchestra, and performing in public concerts. An audience of 1800 donated £17500 to charity over four nights.
