Overview

This course examines human rights within a social work framework from a European perspective. The European focus is on Germany although discussion about Europe as a whole is also an important part of the course. The location of Munich adds essential context to the study of human rights, as contemporary human rights arose from the history in this part of the world.

Open to all disciplines; no language or other prerequisites. To be accepted, student must be in good standing.

Number of Participants

Varies, no particular maximum or minimum. However, the course is intended for small groups, and generally course numbers are between 10 and 15.

Housing

Students will reside in European style hostels and be responsible for their own meals. However, the course provides a stipend with which to purchase some of the meals.

Transportation

Participants must arrange their own transportation from the United States to Munich. The program then covers all transportation necessary for field visits. Participants also receive a metro pass for Munich, which can be used for personal trips around Munich, as well as field visits.

Program Cost

The program fee is $1,500, plus a $50 nonrefundable application fee charged by International Programs, for a total of $1,550. The program fee does not include tuition or airfare or other transportation from the United States to Munich, Germany. Students must arrange and purchase their own airfare/transportation to Munich.

Students should submit at least $300 with their application, $50 of which pays the nonrefundable application fee charged by International Programs. The remaining balance of $250 is applied toward the program fee, leaving a balance of $1,250 to pay. The student will have a payment schedule for paying the balance, with the final payment due the month before the course begins. If a student decides not to participate and informs International Programs or Professor Reichert no later than 60 days before the course begins, any amount paid by the student, other than the $50 nonrefundable fee, will be refunded. No refunds of any amount paid will be allowed within 60 days of the course without approval by Professor Reichert.

Other Costs

SIUC tuition is not included. International Programs will provide the exact amount of tuition due for three credit hours, which depends on whether a student is an undergraduate or graduate student. There is no difference in tuition rates, even if a participant is from a university outside Illinois.

Students must also purchase most of their meals, which can be done for the equivalent of between 15-20 dollars per day, depending on the individual students choices. Restaurant meals can easily exceed this amount. The program does provide a stipend of around $75 to cover some of the meals, and there is a farewell dinner provided by the program.

Financial Aid

Financial aid from SIUC is available for SIUC students only and requires full-time registration. Students from other institutions should contact their home university for their procedures to obtain financial aid.

They are several graduate and undergraduate scholarships available to the international programs office. The graduate school and the center for inclusive excellence might have also scholarships available. Contact – Dr. Reichert for more information.

Travel Insurance

Students should always take out travel insurance when they book their airfares. This insurance should cover the cost of any airfare booked in case of emergencies that prevent participation in the course. These emergencies will be stated within the travel insurance guidelines. Emergencies generally include health, death of family member, cancellation of program, political turmoil, and other unforeseen events.
