Meet the Member Last issue, we introduced two members. Here are two more of them: Nancy Quinn and Jennifer Miller. Nancy Quinn

Hi! I’m Nancy Quinn, a M.T. student at Oshkosh, about to enter my last year of classes.  Long ago in high school, I looked into M.T. and even visited Anita Louise Steele at the Cleveland Music Settlement. I decided against M.T. at the time, but started college as a flute performance major. Bit the dust on that one after 1 ½ years, and went on to finish a B.A. in psychology. After graduation, I went to a tiny town in Sicily, Italy and taught, primarily English, at an experimental school for gifted, impoverished boys for 3 years. Upon returning to the U.S., I went back to school to get my elementary education teaching credentials. I taught elementary school in Glencoe, IL for 9 years, when I was ready to retool again. I returned to school and got my B.S. in Physical Therapy, and worked as a P.T. for 18 years. During my years as a P.T., I took up the harp, where I was introduced to the idea of harp therapy…. Somewhere along the line, my mother sent me Deforia Lane’s autobiography…. And then when I was working at the Mayo Clinic, in P.T., they were looking at starting a M.T. program, had a number of programs for the staff about it, and had Deforia come to speak. I still had not really considered another career change, when we moved to Oshkosh in 2000. I was playing my harp in a Christmas program for the children at Winnebago Mental Health Institute here in town, when the volunteer coordinator stopped me after my program, and said I should really look into the M.T. program here in town. I had no idea that there was a program here, but all of the information that had been crossing my path in the past few years started to come together in my mind. I contacted David Luce, and the rest, as they say, is history. I am very excited to have this opportunity to do what I feel is a culmination of all the pieces of past careers and interests!

Jennifer Miller, MT-BC

Jennifer began her musical studies in fourth grade when she began playing the flute. She continued playing the flute through middle and high school, participating in flute choir and solo and ensemble contests. She continued her flute studies at Alverno College in Milwaukee and received her Bachelor of music in 1998. In 1999, Jennifer completed her 6-month music therapy internship at the Milwaukee Mental Health Complex. Jennifer went on to join the staff at Music Therapy Services of Waukesha County in the summer of 1999. She currently sees clients at the MTSWC clinic in Hartland as well as at the music therapy clinic in Alverno College. Jennifer works primarily with young children with conditions ranging from autism to ADD/ADHD. In addition to music therapy, Jennifer also teaches music lessons (flute, guitar, and piano) at the Family Music Center located in Milwaukee. Her students range from young children to adults.
