にほ んご か 日本語で書きましょう! In order to write in Japanese, we need to practice with the keyboard. Open Microsoft Word. You will need to turn on the IME and use it to write in Japanese. Go though the following exercise and practice typing in Japanese. If you have questions, please call me over.
Two Important rules!!! 1. When you are finished with a word, press the space bar. 2. When you have found the correct form, press the return key.
Hiragana Practice 1. particle 'o' - must type 'wo' 2. small tsu - must type the double constant gakkou 3. long o - as in gakkou, must type a 'u'. 4. kya, kyu, kyo - must not type kiya but kya (きゃ vs きや) 5. partical 'wa' - must be typed as ha not wa (は、わ) 6. for n - you must type n twice to get ん 7. for small ya - type lya 8. for small tsu - type ltsu
Katakana Practice 1. The rules 2 and 4 above for hiragana also apply for katakana. 2. In order to get katakana, you need to hit the space bar. 3. Plus, you must use a hyphen for elongated vowels. (-) 4. For ティ、ディ、デュ、you need to type thi, dhi, dhu respectively. 5. Remember Katakana words tend to be foreign words. Try to write these words in katakana Computer, camera, coffee, party (this one is tricky, see rule 4)
FYI Kanji Practice Since we do not know any kanji at this point, this is just for your information.
1. Similar to katakana, you need to press the space bar to get the kanji. 2. Sometimes you may need to press the space bar until you get the correct character.
Let's try. Type にほんじん and hit the space bar until you find 日本人. Once you do, press return.
Punctuation In Japanese, they use a '、' for a comma, and a '。' for a period. To get these punctuation marks, use can use the same keys for the English version of the commaand period.
Let's type in some familiar words: Copy: はじめまして どうぞよろしく いいえ、あまりたべません。
Try to put these into hiragana: yoroshiku onegaishimasu. konnichiwa.(becareful the wa is not わ but は) ohayou gozaimasu.
Translate these: What did you eat yesterday? I went to bed at nine o’clock.
If there is time, open your textbook to p. 301 and try to type out the passage about Mary.
☺NOTE: Once you have completed the above, send it to me via an email attachment and to yourself! Confirm that it arrives in your email. Installing IME on your computer
