3 IX. Research
My research interest revolves around the Sequence stratigraphy and evaluations of the petroleum potentials, of the Nigerian Inland basins. It focuses on the integrated techniques on Seismic, well logs, biostratigraphic data, cores, cuttings samples retrieved from the basins for diverse predictions which established rock relationships within a chronostratigraphic framework of repetitive, genetically related strata, bounded by surfaces of erosion, non-depositional or their correlative conformities thus predicting the depositional environments within a time stratigraphic framework and for correlation of sedimentary strata..
(a) Completed 1. Palynology and organic geochemical assessments of the Chad Basin as one of the Nigerian sedimentary basins has established eight palynological zones, chronology and maturation for the diverse lithofacies encountered within the basin. The palynomorph morphologies and their displayed coloration shed light on the maturation and the intense of tectonic activities in the region. The northeastern basin ward decreases in maturation and corresponding increase of TOC suggest increase in sedimentation. The higher thermal maturation at volcanically active basin flanks were the most prospective area where the phase of hydrocarbon expulsion is expected to have been reached. The biomolecular signatures indicated the dominance of marine organic matter with terrigenous source input.
2. Petrophysical evaluation and sequence stratigraphy of Exploratory Fields (OPL and OML) located within Onshore and Offshore, Niger Delta. This study has been able to identify structures necessary for hydrocarbon accumulation, overpressured zones and estimation of hydrocarbon reserves. Structural maps of horizons were in wells containing hydrocarbon bearing zones were produced, showing the trapping mechanism to be mainly fault-assisted roll-over structures, also the stock tank oil in place estimated which was attributed to insufficient drive mechanism and high viscosity.
3. Calcareous nannofossil and Foraminifera biostratigraphic evaluation of ditch and core samples from Niger Delta and Chad Basin. The work from the Niger Delta has established major zones which were erected based on index taxa and fossil assemblages recovered. Condensed sections associated with Maximum Flooding Surfaces were also established. The poor recovery of calcareous nannofossil from Chad Basin made zonation impossible.
4. Sedimentological and palyno-environmental appraisal of the late Quaternary sediments northeastern, Bornu Basin. This work has shown predominant argillaceous and terrigenous mudstone with thin intercalated sandstone beds of point bar deposits of laterally migrating, moderate to high sinuosity river channels. It has also recorded limited number of in-situ palynomorph taxa of late Pliocene (Piacenzian) to Mid- Pleistocene (Emilian) (3.4-0.7m.y) indicating freshwater-lacustrine paleoenvironment

Quaternary stratigraphy, palynological and geochemical indices of the Lagos Lagoon Coastal sediments in southwestern Nigeria (Dahomey Basin), presented an evaluation of lithotopes distribution, provenance, environment of deposition and the resulting marine transgression-regression episodes from previous sea level changes.
4 6. The sustainable groundwater development and management in southwestern Nigeria. This has presented the hydro-geochemical assessments of the shallow groundwater sampled from open wells around the Iddo area of southwestern Nigeria. The water quality and usability were determined and the possible pollutants in both rainy and dry seasons were ascertained. The quality of water in this area is of good for domestic and industrial purposes as it is within the acceptable limit of World Health Organization standard.
7. Environmental impact assessment around Lokoja – Abuja environments, northwestern Nigeria (Bida Basin). This work presented the evaluation and emphasizes on the absorption rate and impacts of elemental concentrations in waters, soils and plants as it affects the environment and health in the study area.
In Progress 1. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic evaluation of the Anambra, Benue Trough and Sokoto Basins is in continuation with the work done in Niger Delta. This aim is to erect the major and minor nanno-zones base on the fossil assemblage recovery.
2. The Cretaceous – Tertiary boundary investigation of the Nigeria Sedimentary inland basins. This involves detailed studies on exploratory well samples on the evidences of the events at the Cretaceous – Tertiary (K-T) boundary and its effect on fauna and flora extinctions in Nigeria. The K-T boundary shall be defined via lithological and palaeontological changes as well as the K-T iridium anomaly.
3. The West African Quaternary palaeoclimatic/sea level changes were research based on the evidences from marine and terrestrial sources. This was initiated by the International Quaternary Association (INQUA) in 2010 under the West African Quaternary Research (WAQUA) which was inaugurated in the same year. This work is a multi-field and institutional scientific research to examine the environmental impacts and socio- economic potential climate changes in West African coastal region.
4. Isotope records of palaeoclimate changes in Quaternary sediments of southwestern Dahomey Basin. This involves the use of stable isotopes in understanding the provenance, environment of deposition, age of the sediments and palaeotemperature changes that prevailed during the emplacement of the sediments.

11 RESEARCH FOCUS (DR. O.A. BOBOYE) My research focus is on the assessments of Nigerian inland sedimentary basins in the following areas of Petroleum Geology and Sedimentology: Palynostratigraphy, Organic geochemical appraisal of diverse lithofacies in the Nigerian inland sedimentary basins; Biostratigraphy and Sedimentology; Sequence stratigraphy and hydrocarbon reservoir evaluation (Petrophysical appraisals) via well log suits using petrophysical softwares and integration of some of these areas to explicate the palaeoclimatic proxies of the Quaternary sediments which involved several multiproxy reconstructions which illustrate the climate and environmental change and application of geochemical principles in geo environmental appraisals. The main theme of my research activities entails multiproxies on the fundamental principles via integrated approach in the basin evaluation. This is to explicate the hydrocarbon reservoirs and potential assessments, maturation, environments of deposition, palaeoclimate, palynology of the diverse stratigraphic units, while the sedimentological and palynostratigraphic appraisal was made on the palaeoenvironment of the Quaternary sediments in understanding the palaeoclimate as well as the palaeotemperature via the isotopic compositional content. The research effort in biostratigraphy, palynostratigraphy, geochemical and organic geochemical appraisal areas focused on the multifaceted approach on inland basin assessments in understanding the petroleum potentials, maturation, palynological biozonation, diverse depositional environments, provenance, palaeoecology and chronology of the various stratigraphic units with respect to their fossil contents (foraminifera, calcareous nannofossil and palynomorph species). My research on the calcareous nannofossil was among the first to be published in Niger Delta (Papers 4 and 7). The Chad Basin studied unlike the other inland basins has not been widely investigated due to the seemingly limited hydrocarbon prospects which had yielded no significant discovery. However, the palynological study that was integrated for the first time during the course of my research in the basin had enabled zonation, identification of palynomorph species (new), thermal maturation, chronology, palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimatic conditions were determined. It has also given an insight into the basin inability to generate oil and gas in commercial quantity. The publications that categorize this group include Papers 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20. The research on hydrocarbon reservoir evaluation and sequence stratigraphy has assessed reservoirs via sequence stratigraphic approach which has been employed in Niger Delta Basin. This approach has established rock relationships within a chronostratigraphic framework of repetitive, genetically related strata, bounded by surfaces of erosion, non-depositional or their correlative conformities. It draws upon an understanding of depositional processes and the factors that directly influenced them. The well log suits and biostratigraphic data offer an integrated sequence stratigraphic approach for predicting reservoirs, seals, overpressure zones and potential source rocks. With integration of these data, depositional sequences are delineated and subdivided into systems tracts. Each systems tract is further subdivided into seismic facies which are then mapped along with total isochron thickness of the systems tract itself using diverse softwares. These maps and sections allow seismic attributes to be evaluated relative to their location within specific facies. This approach has been effective in Niger Delta. Publications of Papers 17 and 18 belong to this category. The application of geochemical principles in geo environmental appraisals research is to elucidate the geo environmental challenges which could be geogenic and/or anthropogenic induced and a baseline study on environmental impact assessments (EIA). However, the study has attempted to establish the possible sources of these effects; likewise recommendations were made for amelioration. Geochemical assessments of weathering induced release of the metals and possible impact on both subsurface and surface water were made. The publications in this group are Papers 5 and 21.
