MARY B. SMITH OF 12 RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HER THIRTY YEARS OF 13 DEVOTED TEACHING, ALL OF WHICH WAS SPENT AT 14 GADSDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND EXTEND BEST 15 WISHES ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT. 16 17 Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the House 18 of Representatives that Mrs. Mary B. Smith of Richland County is 19 retiring after thirty years of dedicated service to the public 20 education system; and 21 22 Whereas, Mrs. Smith is married to Moses Smith of Hopkins and 23 she is the proud mother of eight children and fourteen 24 grandchildren; and 25 26 Whereas, Mary Smith received her Bachelors Degree in Early 27 Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina and a 28 Masters Degree in Education from Cambridge College in Boston, 29 Massachusetts; and 30 31 Whereas, she is a member of the Richland County Education 32 Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and school 33 representative for the Richland County Education Association; and 34 35 Whereas, her professional development has demonstrated a broad 36 and thorough grasp of the education process; and 37 38 Whereas, she is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers 39 in 2000 and 2002 and selected as Teacher of the Year at Gadsden 40 Elementary School in 2004-2005; and 41
1 [4048] 1 1 Whereas, her involvement underscores her commitment and 2 unselfish efforts to improve the quality of life in her community 3 which include being a mentor for students at Gadsden Elementary 4 School, coordinating Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for 5 senior citizens, hosts Senior Citizens Day at the school where she 6 has taught for thirty years, and is an active member of the Mount 7 Moriah Baptist Church in Hopkins; and 8 9 Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the House to pause 10 in their deliberations to recognize this outstanding teacher who has 11 given unselfishly of her time and effort touching the many lives of 12 students with whom she has come in contact during her illustrious 13 career. Now, therefore, 14 15 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 16 17 That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate 18 Mrs. Mary B. Smith of Richland County for her thirty years of 19 devoted teaching, all which was spent at Gadsden Elementary 20 School, and extend best wishes on the occasion of her retirement. 21 22 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 23 Mrs. Mary B. Smith and Dr. Charles A. DeLaughter, Principal, 24 Gadsden Elementary School. 25 ----XX---- 26
