Gorey C.B.S. 7-7 Fethard 2-7 (Submitted by John Ormonde) The finals of this years Allianz sponsored Rackard League boys football finals were played at Wexford Park on Saturday 7th November. Proceedings kicked off with holders Gorey C.B.S taking on last years Roinn B winners Fethard. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Fethard got off the mark quickly when full forward Richard Waters kicked a fine point. However they suffered a major set back when Gorey midfielder Paul Murphy goaled after the Fethard boys failed to clear the ball from a free kick. Fethard responded admirably and scored the next four points, three from Mikie Dwyer and one from Richard Waters. Again lady luck appeared to conspire against them when a ’45 taken by Paul Murphy deflected off a backs hand and ended up in the back of the net. Although Fethard again responded with a Joe Sutton point, the momentum was now firmly with the holders and by half time they had added another goal and two points to their tally, the goal coming from Aodhan Doyle and points from Paul Murphy and Charlie McGuckin, son of former Offaly hurling star Shane. This left the scoreline at 3-2 to Gorey and 1-5 to Fethard at the interval. Playing into the teeth of the strong breeze in the second half it seemed unlikely that Fethard could make up the deficit against such an experienced outfit, as Gorey. To their credit they battled on gamely. Further points followed from Charlie McGuckin Daniel Brennan and two from James Lynch extended the lead. Mikie Dwyer responded with a Fethard point. The Poulfur boys were then thrown a lifeline when a Mikie Barden 45 somehow made its way to the back of the Gorey net to leave just a goal between the sides 2-6 to 3-6. The champions responded to this set back in style. They swept down the field and James Lynch drove an excellent shot to the net. Two more Gorey gaols followed from midfielder Daniel Brennan. The game was up for Fethard and although Joe Sutton added another fine point, Gorey finished up the scoring with a Charlie McGuckin point and a James Lynch goal.It was an entertaining game where the standard of football on show was extremely high, despite the conditions. Best for a well trained Gorey C.B.S. team were Daniel Sunderland, Gary Molloy, Killian Cushe, Adam Dunbar, Paul Murphy, Daniel Brennan, James Lynch, Charlie McGuckin. For a gallant Fethard team, Martin Doyle Chris Molloy, Joe Sutton, James Sutton, Richard Waters, and Mikey Dwyer had fine performances. Boys Football Roinn B Final 2009 (John Colloton Rackard League) Taghmon 4-5 Adamstown 3-7 Sat. 7th November 2009 Teachers and underage coaches can be very proud of the rise and rise of Taghmon’s Rackard League footballers. They now have progressed from the third to top division in a few success laden seasons. Victory after a hard fought encounter over a gallant Adamstown outfit in Saturdays’ Roinn B decider places them in top flight football next year. This was a really fabulous game where tigerish tackling, accurate shooting and wonderful support play were the order of the day. The neutrals heart would have to go out to Adamstown and their never say die attitude but alas it was not to be their day. Ian Carthy gave Taghmon the lead with a well struck 30 metre after two minutes and it was a lead that they would refuse to relinquish. Shortly afterwards Adamstown replied in excellent style as the brilliant ball carrying skills of Liam Stafford and Bob Whitty resulted in J. P. Furlong firing low with a thunderbolt that Steven O’ Gorman had no chance of saving. Whitty and Taghmon’s dangerous full forward Conor Hogan exchanged neat points before the cool and calm Barry Óg McGrath slotted over two frees. Next it was the turn of Adamstown‘s centre forward Harry Cosgrave to display his unnerving accuracy from the placed ball. Johnny Murphy completed Taghmon’s first half haul with a well taken point after great work by Stuart Murphy. Taghmon had played well with a strong wind but had the fantastic first half save by John Roche or the tenacious defending by the Adamstown rear guard and Ronan Whelan been enough to keep the Newbawn, Raheen and Adamstown unit in it ?.Half time score Taghmon 1-5 Adamstown 1- 2. The second half was another competitive and hard fought affair. Three fantastic goals by Taghmon coming from Ian Carthy after a defence splitting solo run, the opportunistic Anthony Roche and a fearsome shot from Hogan who was set up by Roche ultimately proved to be Adamstown’s undoing. However, as the second half began it looked as though Adamstown were going to make little of the underdog tag. The mile a minute Daire Bolger fired over a good point which was followed by two more from the ever reliable Cosgrave. Andrew French struck the next blow with a sweet ground shot after a hectic goalmouth scramble. The loss of Taghmon’s influential full back Luke Sinnott through injury served merely to spur on his team mates as Adam Winters dropped back and Shane Doyle came out to the middle third of the field and collected ball after ball. Whitty popped over another fine point and a great goal by Seán Barden was just reward for his continuous hard work and driving forward. Now the hearts began to rattle inside our chests as the final minutes approached. At the very death Adamstown were awarded a 20 m free and an absolute bullet from Whitty just skimmed over the crossbar to the relief of the Taghmon supporters . So its Roinn A for Taghmon next year and a hugely bright future for Ross District football if these two fine teams are anything to go by! Final score Taghmon 4-5 Adamstown 3- 7. ALLIANZ RACKARD LEAGUE ROINN B BOYS FOOTBALL FINAL 2009 Roinn C Final Cushinstown 5-10 Oylegate 4-1 History was certain to be made in this years Roinn C. Allianz sponsored boys final as neither of the two teams had ever previously won a Rackard League football title. Oylegate elected to play with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and really needed to make this advantage count. Unfortunately for them, it was 15 min into the game before they settled and played the kind of football they are capable of. Cushinstown on the other hand got straight into their stride and raced into a five point lead. Patrick Murphy opened the scoring with a pointed free and five minutes later the same player goaled. Full forward Adam Delaney then added another point. Seamus Casey got Oylegate off the mark with a point midway through the half. Patrick Murphy added another fine point leaving Oylegate with and awful lot to do, even at that early stage. They were sparked into action by a Conor Doyle goal, followed quickly by a goal from Damien Reck free kick. Oylegate now were piling on the pressure, hoping to build up a lead before half time. Another major from Seamus Casey extended their advantage to four points. Crucially however Cushinstown scored three successive points before the break, two from midfielder Jason Dunne and one from his partner Robert Kehoe to reduce the deficit to one point. It seemed unlikely that this lead would be enough for Oylegate having played with the wind and so it transpired. In the second half Cushinstown simply took over the game. They dominated possession and added four goals and four points to their scoreline. The goals came from Robert Kehoe, substitute Corey Bolger, Jason Dunne, and Enda Kelly with points from Patrick Murphy Adam Delaney, Robert Kehoe and Enda Kelly. To their credit Oylegate never gave up and were eventually rewarded for their efforts with the last score of the game an Evan Kelly goal. On the day Cushinstown were just a little bigger and stronger, but credit to both sides for winning their respective districts, and congratulations to Cushinstown who added this football title to the hurling Roinn C crown won before the summer holidays. ALLIANZ ROINN A GIRLS FOOTBALL FINAL 2009 GLYNN 1-13 PIERCESTOWN 4-1 This Allianz Roinn A final was a real rollercoaster of a game. A barnstorming second half comeback by holders Piercestown almost caught Glynn, who had dominated the first half, but the Glynn girls held on to capture their first ever Allianz Roinn A title. Glynn were quickly into their stride and this early pressure yielded the first score of the game with a Chloe Cashe point from a 45. Piercestown, the holders, were slow to settle and were under severe pressure from the attacking play of Glynn. The hugely impressive Aisling Whelan was a constant threat to the Piercestown rearguard with her incisive, darting runs. Indeed the first quarter developed into an Aisling Whelan exhibition as she reeled off five points from play from various angles and distances. She was well supported during this period by Laura Dempsey and Sadhbh O’Flaherty whose intelligent play created many of Aisling’s opportunities. The fact that Piercestown didn’t concede a goal can be attributed to some excellent play from the full back line superbly marshalled by Lauren Carthy. Piercestown did have their chances but time and again their final shot was off target. Indeed only for an instinctive reaction save from Aoife O’Neill, Melissa Redmond would have bagged the first goal of the game. However a further brace of Aisling Whelan points sent Glynn in with a commanding eight point lead and left Piercestown ruing their missed chances. However the second half proved to be a completely different story. Right from the throw in Piercestown broke downfield and Jacqueline Breslin finished off a fine move to the net to bring Piercestown back with a bang. Aisling Whelan replied instantly for Glynn with another minor but this was cancelled out when Orla Barrett reacted quickest to the breaking ball to fire over for the Murrintown girls. Sadhbh O’Flaherty tagged another minor before Piercestown’s Jacqueline Breslin struck for her second major from close range to make it 0-10 to 2-1 with fifteen minutes left. Glynn, to their credit, didn’t panic and kept their shape and kept playing good football. They were rewarded when Nicola McDonald broke through the Piercestown defence and goaled despite the best efforts Stephanie Murphy. With five minutes remaining Piercestown moved full back Lauren Carthy up front and they didn’t have to wait long for the move to pay dividends as she powered through the Glynn defence and crashed the ball to the net. Nicola McDonald and Sadhbh O’Flaherty steadied Glynn nerves with two quick fire points making it 1-12 to 3-1. However Piercestown showed why they were champions last year and have come through play- offs and extra time this year as they came with another late surge. Laura Carthy collected a dangerous Eimear Doherty free and smashed the ball to the net to make it 1-12 to 4-1 entering injury time. However this was to be Glynn’s night and it was only fitting that Aisling Whelan should round off a superb individual and team display by firing over the last point with the final kick of the game. ALLIANZ ROINN B GIRLS FOOTBALL FINAL 2009 TINTERN 5-4 RAMSGRANGE 2-2 Tintern overcame the disappointment of losing last years final to claim their second ever Allianz Roinn C title with a storming second half display to see off a skilful Ramsgrange side in the second of the evenings finals in Taghmon on Thursday last. There was very little between the sides in the opening half as both teams settled well. Shannon Doyle opened the scoring for Tintern with a fine right footed effort. Ramsgrange replied instantly when Joanne Dillon’s long range effort skidded past Katie Stafford with five minutes gone. Tintern continued to press forward and were rewarded when Muireann Kehoe reacted quickest to the breaking ball from Danielle Odham’s free kick to make it 1-1 to 1-0 with ten minutes gone. The slippery conditions were making it difficult for defenders and this worked to Ramsgrange’s advantage when Lydia Hickey’s dangerous free kick squirmed its way through a forest of players and into the net to again put Ramsgrange into the lead. Ciara Ryan and Lydia Hickey swapped points before Laura Egan latched onto a loose ball and finished to the net to send Tintern back into the lead. Lydia Hickey then tied the scores with a pointed free. Tintern however were creating more chances and only for two excellent saves from Shauna Foley they would have been ahead at half time. Tintern stepped up the pace in the second half and took the lead with a fine Laura Egan point after a flowing move. This was quickly followed by a stunning goal when Laura Egan broke through the Ramsgrange defence and rifled an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Tintern were very much on top but it is to Ramsgrange defence’s credit that Tintern did not increase their lead time and again Emily Kehoe and Fiona Mowatt clearing the danger. Tintern eventually broke down the stubborn Ramsgrange rearguard when the impressive Ellie Sheehan burst upfield and fired over. Tintern struck for the decisive score when Michelle Ryan finished to the net after a dazzling solo run. Tintern’s dominance of the second half was underlined when Ciara Ryan’s 45 found its way to the net through a crowded goalmouth with time almost up. Ramsgrange battled hard throughout and were well served by Shauna Foley, Emily Kehoe, Fiona Mowatt, Eimear Lyons, Joanne Dillon and Lydia Hickey while Tintern had match winners in Annastasia Breen, Ellie Sheehan, Ciara Ryan, Michelle Ryan, Laura Egan and Niamh Foran. Referee Ger O’Reilly ALLIANZ GIRLS FOOTBALL ROINN C RACKARD LEAGUE FINAL 2009 HORESWOOD 1-11 MERCY WEXFORD 2-3 Horeswood, who captured the Roinn C title in 2007, continued their impressive rise through the grades when they overcame the determined challenge of first time finalists Mercy Wexford to claim the Allianz Roinn B title. In the first of the evenings finals Horeswood applied the early pressure and opened the scoring with a pointed free from Sinead Ryan after she had been fouled herself. Horeswood were quick to settle and Sinead Ryan added another point after a flowing move. The Mercy opened their account when Lauren Breun and Elizabeth Connors combined well and Elizabeth found the net with a sweet shot from close range to make it 1-0 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. Sinead Ryan , with a long range point, responded well for Horeswood to level the scores. The Mercy edged ahead again with a pointed free from Niamh Walsh. However Horeswood dominated the closing minutes of the half with a succession of fine points from Niamh Mernagh, Hazel Murphy and Sinead Ryan to give them an interval lead of 1-1 to 0-6. Horeswood struck early in the new half when the influential Sinead Ryan rattled the net from the edge of the square. The Mercy bounced straight back with a goal from Niamh Walsh whose shot skidded past Aine Cashin in the Horeswood goal. Both teams were playing well at this stage and the ball was being worked up the field intelligently. Sinead Ryan and Sadhbh Whitty swapped points to make it 1-7 to 2-2. However as the game entered the final quarter Horewood’s impressive trio of Niamh Mernagh, Hazel Murphy and Sinead Ryan became more prominent and Horeswood put the Mercy defence under increasing pressure. The Ross District girls worked a short free kick to Niamh Mernagh and she shot over from the tightest of angles. This was followed by a brace of Sinead Ryan minors before a Niamh Mernagh piledriver was tipped over by Elisa Valadez in the Mercy goal to make it 1-11 to2-2. In fairness to the Mercy girls they kept trying to the very end and were rewarded with a fine Niamh Walsh point on the stroke of full time. Boys Football - Gorey C.B.S. 3-06 Taghmon 2-06

The Allianz sponsored mini-sevens boy’s football final was held in Wexford Park on Tuesday last 12th May. Gorey who were aiming to win the first leg of a football/hurling sevens double against a fancied Taghmon outfit, got off to a tremendous start racing into a six point lead. Points from Paul Murphy, Conor Levingston and a goal and a point from the talented Eoin McGuckin put them into the driving seat. To their credit Taghmon responded brilliantly and by half time they had levelled matters. A Stephen O’Gorman point was followed by a well taken goal by Aodhan Doyle. Conor Levingston pointed again for Gorey but 3 unanswered Taghmon points from Ian Carthy (2) and Aodhan Doyle left the sides at 1-4 a piece at the interval. The second period was full of drama as the tie ebbed and flowed one way and then the other. An Ian Carthy pointed free gave Taghmon the lead for the first time. Gorey responded with a goal from Aodhan Doyle. However a goal and a point from Ian Carthy and Stephen O’Gorman respectively seemed to have won the match for Taghmon. With time running out Eoin McGuckin goaled to retake the lead for Gorey and a Kevin Harrington pointed sealed their victory on a 3-6 to 2-6 scoreline. Great credit is due to both sets of players for the tremendous skill and determination shown, and to their teachers for having the teams so well prepared.

Girls Football Clongeen 3-02 Ballygarrett 1-03

Clongeen N.S. took on Ballygarrett in this year Allianz sponsored INTO/GAA mini-sevens girls’ football final in Wexford Park on Tuesday 12th May. A Katie Doyle goal gave Ballaygarrett the perfect start and with Roisin O’Connor and Tara Doyle dominating at midfield, they had the better of the early exchanges. Roisin Timmons scored a nice point midway through the half to extend their lead. Some good goalkeeping by Geraldine Curtis kept Clongeen in touch and by half time they had reduced their arrears to two points thanks to fine scores from Sarah Farrell and Chloe Fox. The game turned dramatically in the first two minutes of the second period during which the excellent Chloe Fox bagged three goals in quick fire succession, to give Clongeen a commanding lead they were never to relinquish. Ballygarrett were visibly rattled but to their credit they pushed hard to get back into the game. Katie Doyle and Roisin O’Connor pointed, but sterling defensive work by Sarah Murphy, Amy Buttler and Sarah Farrell meant Ballygarrett never got the goal they desperately needed. Clongeen held on to win by 3-2 to 1-3, and received the mini-sevens cup from Rackard League Treasurer John Brennan.

The saying “goals win matches” certainly proved true in the Allianz INTO/GAA Mini 7’s Camogie final in Wexford Park on Thurs evening 14tth May

Camogie - Monageer 4-0 Glynn 0-05

This was a very entertaining match between Monageer and Glynn. It was Glynn who exerted great pressure in the first half with Tara O’ Brien and Sophie Meehan showing great skill in free-taking and side-line cuts. Monageer were working hard in defence all through this first half and the forwards had very few opportunities to score but they capitalised on the one good chance they had with Cait Sinnott finding the back of the net after seven mins. Tara O’ Brien was Glynn’s scorer in the first half with some fine scores from frees and play, leaving the half time score Monageer 1-0 to Glynn 0-3. Tara O’Brien added to her scoring in the second half with a well taken point. However a great free by Eimear Mc Cabe was excellently saved by Chloe Cashe in the Glynn goal only to be finished to the back of the net by Monageer’s Deirdre Kehoe. Eimear Mc Govern and Emma Walsh did some great solo-runs down the field, only to be stopped in their tracks by Roisin Kehoe, who worked tirelessly throughout. A great ball from Emma Walsh was superbly caught in the hand by Aisling Whelan but again the Monageer defence were tremendous . Aisling Whelan and Laura Dempsey tried hard but each time were blocked by this wonderful Monageer defence. Monageer goalie Orla Redmond had some fantastic puckouts and this together with fine clearances from Roisin Fenlon gave forwards some great chances. Siobhan Donoghue who worked hard in the forward line was replaced by Sinead Gahan mid-way into the second half. Meanwhile the injured Sophie Meehan was replaced by Glynns Aoife O’ Neill. Sinead Gahan exerted great pressure on the Glynn goalie from the time she was introduced. A great shot by Deirdre Kehoe was finished to the net by super-sub Sinead Gahan leaving the score at 3-0 to 0-4 with only one minute remaining. Tara O’Brien again scored from a free for Glynn before Sinead Gahan received a fine pass from Roisin Kehoe and scored her second goal for Monageer. This was a very entertaining match with fine performance from both sides. Following the match Monageer Captain, Roisin Kehoe was presented with the new Eimear Gahan memorial cup. The previous Eimear Gahan memorial cup was retired last year when Monageer again were champions. It is very fitting that Monageer were the first winners of both Eimear Gahan memorial cups in 1991 and 2009. Thanks to the Gahan family for presenting this cup to the Rackard League.

Hurling – Murrintown 3-06 Gorey 3-05

The Boys of Murrintown and Gorey CBS served up a fantastic game of hurling in the Allianz INTO GAA mini sevens on Thursday evening 14th May in Wexford park. This was exciting right to the final whistle and winners only emerged after extra time was played. It was Murrintown who got off to a strong start with a number of chances. Darren Codd was unlucky to see his shot go wide after two minutes but shortly after Jake Firman put pressure on Darragh Bellanova who had many saves in the Gorey goal but finally the sliotar slipped through his fingers to the back of the net. Gorey immediately were on the attack and opened their scoring with a fine Aodhan Doyle point. Aaron Maddock pointed a free for Murrintown before Conor Levingstone who had been denied by Murrintown’s Philip Mc Dermott on three occasions finally scored a great goal. Kevin Harrington was also denied a goal by Philip Mc Dermott. Again Aaron Maddock pointed a free to leave the half time score at Murrintown 1-2 Gorey 1-1. Murrintown were first off the mark in the second half with Darragh Kenny receiving a fine pass from Aaron Maddock and finishing with a great goal. Gorey now showed that they were not going to give up easily and had a number of chances with Conor Levingstone unlucky not to find the net again. Cian Ryan and Jake Firman were great in defence for Murrintown. Ben Egan pointed a fine free before Conor Levinstone had another attempt at goal and equalised the match. Gary Molloy came onto Gorey team in place of Kevin Harrington. Paul Murphy put the Gorey boys ahead with just three minutes remaining but great work from Darren Codd and Jake Firman ensured the match would go to extra time. It was Gorey who looked stronger in the first half of extra time and Aodhan Doyle found the net after just one minute. Jake Firman replied with another goal immediately following a fantastic shot from way out the field. Thanks to a Ben Egan 65, Gorey led by the minimum at half time. Gorey were extremely unlucky not to get a goal again before half time with a fine pass from Paul Murphy resulting in a shot from Aodhan Doyle hitting the crossbar. Gorey did find the equaliser with a Paul Murphy point but with less than a minute remaining Jake Firman managed to put Murrintown ahead. It was Philip Mc Dermott who saved the day for Murrintown saving a great shot from Aodhan Doyle on the goal-line to deny Gorey CBS victory. This was a fantastic display of hurling with wonderful displays from all players on both teams. It was heartbreaking for Gorey who played their hearts out throughout. Well done to the boys of Murrintown on this victory. Both teams received their medals from Jim Dempsey and Eamonn Barrett of Rackard League. It was fitting that Murrintown won the first mini sevens in 1988 and now have won the 2009 mini sevens which is the last one in its current format.

Rathgarogue/Cushinstown 2-08 Oylegate/Glenbrien 3-04

On Friday June 19th last Cushinstown achieved an historic first Rackard League title after an epic encounter against Enniscorthy District champions Oylegate. Passion, determination and an abundance of skill were on offer in an evenly matched and sporting duel in perfect conditions at Wexford Park. The opening minutes were tense with Cushinstown’s full forward Adam Delaney narrowly spurning a goal opportunity. Five minutes in Cushintown’s no. 9 Robert Kehoe had a long drive trickle to back of the net to open the score. Two minutes later Oylegate almost replied, centre back Eamon Hogan driving a long range free narrowly wide. Cushinstown increase their lead on eight minutes when centre back Corey Bolger tapped over a free earned after a goal mouth scramble. Oylegate missed a ’65 before a beautiful groundstroke from Cushinstown wing forward Brian Cody put them 1-2 to 0-0 ahead. In the space of a minute both keepers, Kyle Murphy and Adam Casey made terrific stops while Cushinstown’s Kehoe kicked wide. Thus begin a period of Oylegate dominance beginning with a pointed free from Hogan after the impressive midfielder Seamus Casey was fouled. A minute later Oylegate corner forward Niall Kinsella-Shiggins went close with a goal chance before Hogan added the resulting ’65. Full forward Eddie Mernagh tapped over moments later. Cushinstown regrouped minutes before half time and finished the stronger side thanks to two well taken points from midfielder Dylan Bookle. Half time read Cushinstown 1-4 Oylegate 0-3. The opening minutes of the second half witnessed Cushinstown pressure with no. 7 Patrick Murphy and Bolger going close but excellent clearances from Oylegate full back Michael Reck and tidy hooking from No. 7 Ciarán Hourihane kept them at bay. Three minutes in, Casey goaled for Oylegate. Bookle pointed for Cushinstown a minute later and Cushinstown no. 10 Brian Cody was unfortunate to see a stinging drive crash against the crossbar. Oylegate’s Kinsella-Shiggins went close before Hogan scored arguably the point of the day, a curling shot from near the stand side. On 41 minutes Cushinstown replied when Bolger went for goal and scored from a free, earned after excellent harrying of the keeper from sub Enda Kelly. Oylegate responded immediately when corner forward Barry Dunne flicked a speculative lob to the corner of the net. One minute later Casey added another after a nimble side step and turn before driving high to the corner. A point from Cushinstown’s Jason Dunne left them trailing by one point with three minutes remaining. In the final minutes a foul on Cushinstown sub Eoin Porter allowed Bolger to score and Dunne added the winning point to leave the final score Cushinstown 2-08 Oylegate 3-04.

Last years beaten finalists Kilmuckridge met Fethard in this years Allianz sponsored Rackard League Roinn C camogie final at Wexford park on Friday last. Great credit is due to Fethard N.S. who have only recently entered the camogie competition. However on this occasion Kilmuckridge proved to be just too strong. The Alley girls dominated the first half and by the interval led by seven points courtesy of a Georgia Warren goal, and a goal and a point from the excellent Sophie Donnelly. Fethard to their credit never gave up and Stephanie Foley, Rose Wallace and Cora Cullen in particular played extremely well. The goal they so badly needed to re-ignite their challenge never materialised however due mainly to good goalkeeping by Rachel O'Leary and an outstanding defence display from Sorcha Foley. Sophie Donnelly added two further points to give Kilmuckridge the victory and the Rackard cup which was presented by a delighted Maria Butler

BOYS RACKARD LEAGUE ROINN 1 FINAL

Piercestown 3-15 Gorey C.B.S 1-05 Last Wednesday evening saw a near perfect performance by Piercestown as they defeated Gorey C.B.S to claim the Rackard League Hurling title on a sun drenched Wexford Park. Both teams had topped their respective leagues in the run up to the final and Gorey C.B.S was aiming for a fourth title in a row. Piercestown playing with the wind in the first half had the better of the early exchanges with their centre forward Joe Coleman in fine form confidently striking over a 65 to send Piercestown into an early lead. For most of the first half both defences were on top with both centre backs in dominant form. Piercestown however began to win the midfield battle with Jake Firman and Aaron Maddock pulling the strings. Firman was to finish the half with four points to his credit alongside points from Kenny (1), Walsh (1), J Coleman (3), and C Coleman (1). Gorey C.B.S to their credit continued to hurl well and replied with points from Eoin McGuikin and the impressive Aobahn Doyle. The second half in truth belonged to Piercestown and especially to Joe Coleman who seemed to be able to pull out scores from every conceivable angle. As well as scoring 1-5 in the second half he had a hand in Piercestown’s two other goals with some neat hand passing. Gorey C.B.S tried their best to stay in touch but with the Piercestown full back line in formidable form they were kept out though Ben Egan the Gorey centre back put over three lovely 65’s . Conor Levingstone added a late consolation goal for Gorey but Piercestown were not to be denied and when Dickie Murphy blew the final whistle most in the crowd would admit that the better team had won.

Piercestown Murrintown 1-3 Rathnure 0.2

This year Allianz sponsored Rackard League Camogie final featured Piercestown/Murrintown and Rathnure. The game was a repeat of last years Roinn A decider in which Rathnure were victorious after extra time. This year the girls of Pircestown/Murrintown National schools were not to be denied. Wind assisted they completely dominated the first half possession. However due to some great defending by Shannon O’Leary and Leanne Foley and to the outstanding goal keeping of Laura Brennan, Rathnure restricted their opponents to a solitary point scored by Katie O’Connor from a 65,. Facing into the second half breeze Piercestown may have felt they had blown their chances but an inspiration point from Amy Cardiff from the throw in doubled their advantage. Rathnure to their credit came more into the game and a fine pointed free by Kaylee O’Connor reduced the deficit to the bare minimum. A goal midway through the half by Amy Rochford proved to be the decisive socre and gave Piercestown a commanding lead they never looked like relinquishing. Katie O’Connor, Katie O’Connel added one further point to their sides tally to leave the final score at 1-3 to 0.2 and give Pierstown their first ever Roinn A title. Best for the winners on the day were Mureann Byrne, Anna Corcoran, Ellen Barrett, Katie O’Connor, Aishling Cronin, and Amy Rochford while for the gallant losers. Laura Brennan, Michelle Martin, Olivia Lambert and Kaylee O’Connel stood out.

A point in injury time by Barntown’s Tara O’Brien was the winning score in this enthralling Allianz camogie final played in Wexford Park on Tuesday last. Indeed it was the first time that Barntown had taken the lead over a gallant Bannow team. Bannow , with the aid of the breeze in the first half, were quickly into their stride with a fine point from Pamela Fitzharris on the run from the open stand side into the Clonard end. The Bannow girls exerted all the early pressure and Leone Reville fired over another minor with five minutes gone. However the Glynn girls began to settle and Roisin Cooney went close on two occasions only to be frustrated by excellent defending from Shauna Levingstone. Bannow regained the upper hand when Nicole Culleton finished to the net from close range despite the best efforts of Glynn goalie Aoife O’Neill. Bannow continued to pile on the pressure and raised another white flag when Pamela Fitzharris’ goalbound effort was brilliantly deflected over by Eimear McGovern to make it 1-3 to 0-0 with eighteen minutes gone. Barntown were coming more and more into the game and deservedly opened their account with a Tara O’Brien free. The hard running of Nicole Morrissey had been causing Bannow problems throughout the first half and she was rewarded with a lovely point on the stroke of half time to make it 1-3 to 0-2 at the interval. With the aid of the breeze Glynn set the early pace but found space at a premium in front of Bannow’s goal. The impressive Aisling Whelan narrowed the gap with a point on the spin and she levelled the scores with a well taken goal on thirteen minutes. Bannow responded immediately with an excellent Mairead Moran point but this was cancelled out by another O’Brien free to leave the scores level with ten minutes left. Both teams upped the tempo in the closing stages and there was excellent blocking and hooking displayed by both teams. However as Nicola Morrissey bore down on goal in injury she was fouled and Tara O’Brien made no mistake from in front of the posts to seal a famous victory for Barntown. Shauna Levingstone, Shannon McDonald, Leona Reville and Pamela Fitzharris were outstanding for the Danescastle girls while Barntown had real stars in Eimear McGovern, Chloe Cashe, Aisling Whelan, Laura Dempsey and Nicola Morrissey. Rackard League Secretary Jim Dempsey presented the cup to a jubilant Glynn captain Sophie Meehan.

GLYNN 5-9 MONAGEER 2-7

A classy display by the Glynn forward division proved too much for a determined Monageer outfit in this keenly contested Allianz hurling final played in a sun drenched Wexford Park last Tuesday. Glynn, despite playing with the wind in the first half and exerting much of the early pressure fell behind to two early points from Monageer’s Graham O’Reilly and James Walsh. Aaron Kehoe who was a constant threat opened the scoring for Glynn with a pointed free but this was quickly cancelled out by another O’Reilly free and JamesWalsh tagged on another point after a mazy run to make it 0-4 to 0-1 with fifteen minutes gone. Glynn were beginning to find their rhythm and rattled the net for the first time when Matt Doyle flicked home Ben O’Shea;s centre. Boolavogue bounced back to edge ahead with a fine Cormac Byrne point. Towering centre forward Luke Rafter combined with Aaron Kehoe for Glynn’s second major but again Monageer answered with a O’Reilly point to make it 2-01 to 0-6 with twenty one minutes gone. However in the closing stages Glynn powered on and reeled off a succession of points from Rowan White, Rafter and Aaron Kehoe and rounded it off with a brilliant goal from Kehoe on the stroke of half time to make it 3-5 to 0-6 at the interval. Straight from the throw in Fionn Cooney goaled for Glynn but again Monageer hit back immediately with a Shay Gahan goal. Adam Dunne saved brilliantly from a Rowan White piledriver only for Aaron Kehoe to fire the rebound over the bar. Graham O’Reilly and Kevin O’Mahony swapped points before Cormac Byrne was quickest to react to the breaking ball and fire to the Glynn net to make it 4-7 to2-7 with eight minutes left.This was as close as Monageer managed to get but they battled superbly to the final whistle. Aaron Kehoe and theimpressive Rowan White added further minors before White’s long range effort found the back of the net to conclude the scoring. This was a fine game of hurling with both teams showing excellent skills and high workrate and they are a credit to their schools, teachers and parents. Monageer had excellent performers in Adam Dunne Larence Gahan, Sean Roche, Camon O’Brien Shane Gahan and Patrick and James Walsh while Glynn had outstanding hurlers in Adam Kennedy, David Clarke, Shane Wilde, Rowan White, Ben O’Shea, Luke Rafter and Aaron Kehoe.
