Picture Books: Reading Log

Just as there are different types of films and novels, so too are there different types of picture books. In fact, contrary to popular opinion, not all of them are even aimed at a childhood audience.

To complete your reading log you need to select 6 picture books and add them to your reading log. For each book you need to note down basic reference information, including:  Title  Author  Illustrator  Publisher  Place of publication  Year of publication

This information will be found on the cover and on the opening page or two of the book.

Your response and analysis is made up of three short sections:

 Synopsis: This is a plot summary. Outline important events and characters here.

 Illustrations: In this section you need to carefully consider what effect the illustrations have. Do the illustrations simply retell the written text? Or do the illustrations add a new dimension to the story? You will also need to consider other aspects such as colour, type of illustration and symbolism. Think specifically about what emotion is portrayed through the use of colour, for example, dark colours are often used to create a negative feel.

 Personal Opinion: In this section you need to briefly outline your own reaction to the book. Did you enjoy it? Why / why not? What aspects did you think worked well? Was there anything you didn’t like or thought could be done better? You could even compare it to other picture books you have read.
