STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION MINUTES November 3, 2009

I. ROLL CALL: Courtney Sarantos, Samantha LaCasse, David Kemp, Krysta Livingstone, Megan Bishop, Karen Renda, and Sean White were absent.

II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM October 20, 2009: The minutes were accepted.

III. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Colleen Murphy A. Good evening everyone and Happy November. I move to accept Charlie Bain as the President of the Apartment Complex. The motion was seconded and passed. B. We are sending around the contact list for the last time. C. I had a meeting today about housing. Publicity for housing sign ups and deposit dates will start right after Thanksgiving. Room reservation deposits will be due on March 1st and immediately after spring break, apartment sign ups will commence. D. So far the feedback on co-ed apartments has been nothing but positive. ResLife is looking to open this option up to more apartments. Do you have any feedback on Co-ed apartments? 1. KRISTIN MAZEIKA: I had a friend who thought she was going to be a 4 girl, 2 guy apartment and then they switched it over and is now a 4 guy, 2 girl apartment and she was really uncomfortable. Is there any way they can advertise the changes. E. Apartment selection. They are looking at three models right now. One would be to keep it the way it is. You turn in a 4 or 6 person roster. The roster must be full and you can choose 4 or 6 and that is that. The second model is where everyone signs up for a room, not full apartments. You piece meal the whole thing. A third option would allow for groups of 5 seniors to go into an apartment but without a full roster and then have a piece meal process after the fact. You could go in 6 seniors, then 5 seniors, etc. and then 5 seniors, 1 junior, etc. Feed back on what people would like to see at apartment sign ups and what you think of the two models? 1. CAITLIN BARRY: I don’t think it’s fair if you try to get a four person apartment then go for the 6 person because then the people who wanted a 6 person apartment to begin with get the short end of the stick. 2. DANIELLE SERVIDEO: I don’t like the piecing option because when you are living in an apartment you want to know the people you are living with and people would rather take a chance with a full roster. 3. CAITLIN BARRY: It went well last year. 4. KRISTIN MAZEIKA: I feel it would be more of a hassle for ResLife to do the piece meal thing. 2

I think it is a better idea for people who don’t have full rosters to go to the roommate meet and greet thing and to advertise those meet and greet events better. 5. NICOLE NALEPA: I liked the diagrams used for the apartments. F. ResLife is thinking about keeping Davis all freshmen and turning Dickinson into all freshmen as well. I would like to hear some feedback from those of us in Davis as well as anyone else’s thoughts on this idea. 1. SAMANTHA LACASSE: I live in Davis and I love that it is all freshmen. You don’t have to deal with upperclassmen picking on you. 2. CHRIS LEWIS: I think it is a good thing because you will be living with these people for all four years so it’s going to be good to get to know them. 3. DANIELLE SERVIDEO: Would they lower all the spots in the other residence halls for other freshmen? 4. COLLEEN MURPHY: Except for special living units they would significantly lower the amount of freshmen spots in all the residence dorms. 5. KRISTIN MAZEIKA: I think that people coming in on tours would be really worried about only freshmen living together and not getting to make those upperclassmen connections. 6. MEAGHAN MACDONALD: I don’t think that just having freshmen living is the answer. 7.AMY WING: When I was a freshman I lived with upperclassmen and I enjoyed it. I think it’s important to make those upperclassmen connections, but also have that option for students who just want to live with freshmen. So keeping Davis is a good idea but changing Dickinson would hurt more students. 8. CAITLIN BARRY: I lived in Dickinson my freshmen and sophomore year and I enjoyed it. 9. NICOLE DIPILATO: I feel like there are a lot of forced triples in Davis and if they had the freshmen living in forced triples in the other residence halls they might be more comfortable with it. The forced triples in Lammers are much more livable then in Davis. 10. KRISTIN MAZEIKA: I think that having a sparse amount of first years in the other residence halls would make it even more awkward for them. H. Another idea is to allow the “random” placement or administrative assignment people be able to choose a room if they will be an international host to one of our students coming in. Be like a tour guide, a resource, etc, almost. 1. ANDY GOLAS: I really like that idea, I know of two international students that roomed together and they didn’t get the most out of the experience. 2. CAITLIN BARRY: Would that person have to agree to be a host? 3. COLLEEN MURPHY: Not sure, it would depend on how many students would be coming in. We have also 3

talked about including the National students in that as well. 4. KRISTIN MAZEIKA: When will this be definite? 5. COLLEEN MURPHY: We will meet biweekly until the housing process is over. As of right now nothing is definite. I. Are there any other housing comments, concerns, thoughts about the process that I can forward to Josh? 1. JILL FAGAN: I would hate to see that Hotel thing happen again. 2. NICOLE DIPILATO: I understand how you have to reserve rooms for freshmen, I was wondering if you could reserve more upper floors for freshmen instead of upperclassmen being stuck on the top floor. J. Thank you everyone and I will keep everyone updated. Surveys will be coming out via MyWestfield for the Parking and Smoking policies. Please make sure to keep checking to see them and give constructive feedback and not just criticism. K. Advancement and college Relations will be hosting a thank you wrap up session for homecoming volunteers on November 9th from 12:30- 2:00pm in the Scanlon Living Room. I will be forwarding the email to everyone who volunteered within the week. Please RSVP on the link in the email. L. I am about to send an email to Dr. Robie about some questions about Ely and its construction. Does anyone have any building issues, questions, or comments they would like to have forwarded? Right now there have been complaints that the 3rd floor women’s bathroom light shuts off about a minute after entering. As well there been requests for vending machines on the 3rd floor. M. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving we will not have a meeting so plan accordingly. Also, I will not have office hours on that Tuesday as well. N. Every year we rake leaves for the Cancer House of Hope and this year I am looking to do this on either Sunday the 15th or the 22cnd. Can I see a show of hands on which date would be better for everyone? It eventually depends on the Cancer House of Hope and the leaves but I’ll try to do what I can. O. The next few speakers for the meetings are lined up. Next week Laurie Simpson and some personnel from Academic Advising will be here. The following week Ken Lemanski and Advancement and College Relations will be down. The week after is Thanksgiving and then on December 1st John Ohotnicky from the Registrar’s office will be down. If you have any questions for any of these departments have them ready for those dates. P. Midnight Madness is this Thursday the 5th from 10:30pm-12:00am in the Woodward center. Kate Quigley is running the event and is looking for set up volunteers around 9:30pm. Is there anyone available to help out? You will get a unit for volunteering and you will get two for going to the event so you potentially could receive 3 units for the night. Q.
