Dental Aid Position Description
POSITION: Extended Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) REPORTS TO: Clinic Manager or Clinic Lead POSITION STATUS: non-exempt (hourly)
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of a dentist, performs all extended duty dental tasks, assists dentist during dental procedures, makes timely and effective decisions based on sound reasoning and analysis of the situation. Records medical and dental data and vital signs as directed by a dentist. Exposes, develops and properly mounts dental radiographs. May polish teeth and apply fluoride coating to teeth as directed by a dentist. May be expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED Certified dental assistant. May be EDDA certified Excellent technical skills Experienced in performing all above listed EDDA duties Excellent team player with the ability to work well with other dental support staff and with different dentists Ability to relate well to diverse patients and staff Excellent communication skills Ability to learn quickly and prioritize tasks to assure maximum production for the dentists Must be willing to work at all Dental Aid sites Well developed sense of humor
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the direct supervision of a dentist, places and finishes amalgam and composite fillings Takes preliminary alginate impressions Makes and places temporary crowns Prepares the area of prepped tooth for final impression Takes final impression for crowns and bridges checks and adjusts the bite, occlusion, contacts and margins Cements temporary and permanent crowns and assists dentist in choosing shade for final crown or restorations Adjusts full and partial dentures, night guards and sports guards, checks the sore spots due to wearing dentures. Helps with handling LAB cases which includes making sure that the lab slip is written properly, models are marked and lab cases processed on time Performs all duties regularly assigned to a dental assistant (see assistant position description)
AUTHORITY/ACCOUNTABILITY The extended duty dental assistant reports to the clinic manager or clinic lead, but must work under direct supervision of the dentists providing care. The EDDA is accountable to the dentist for quality and quantity of clinical work. Must comply with all organizational policies, procedures and protocols.
