Cornell Club of Northeast Ohio iPhone App Development Competition July 2014

Greetings Northeast Ohio Cornellians!!

It’s with great excitement that the CCNEO announces a competition to develop an iPhone App that will serve as a networking and organizational tool for our club members. The club will award the 1st prize winner by paying for 3 years of the Mac Developer Program a $100 gift certificate to the Apple Store and we’ll pay for your registration to Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 20151. If we have more than 10 participants, we plan on also awarding 2nd and 3rd prize winners $100 and $50 gift certificates to the Apple Store respectively. All participants who demonstrate an app that meets the minimum criteria will be invited to dinner with members of the CCNEO Board.

App Competition Guide Our mission is to foster communications and growth between Cleveland and Cornell by promoting Cornell to our region’s students and foster networking, both business and social, between alumni of all ages in the Northeast Ohio region. Our vision is this app will bring alumni together by giving them one central place where they can connect with the club online, discover and RSVP to upcoming events, review past events, and track their own participation. Below is a guide for the competition that details minimum app performance criteria, a guide to more open-ended functions of the app, and our scoring criteria. Good luck!

Functionality – To be considered for the competition, there are some minimum tasks that our app must be able to execute: Calendar of Events – A list of upcoming and past events, synopsis, and links to SquareSpace Login – Allowing the storage and editing of personal information such as Class Year and College and the ability to recall information such as member volunteer hours Board Member Bios and Contacts Member Directory – The login will append this data and Editors can also add info. This could also link to LinkedIn profiles and the club’s LinkedIn Page. News – This can primarily be sourced from our Facebook and Twitter feeds Contact – An email address for questions or a form to submit ideas for events Donate – A quick and convenient way to donate to both CCNEO and to Cornell

Design – With the above minimum criteria met, Board Members will rate the apps with on the following criteria with a score of 1 to 10 where 10 is the best score. User Navigation Ease – Landing page layout, ease of finding specific items Editor Update Ease – Non app developer ease to add updates Style – The intangible feel of the app Cornell Pride – Incorporate our alma mater while following Cornell’s Brand Guide Durability – Does the app crash and the level of developer dependency for future updates or troubleshooting Above and Beyond – Addressing elements not outlined in this guide, replacing the full functionality of SquareSpace for example within the app.

App developers should be prepared to demonstrate their apps on their own devices December 9th at our Board Meeting2. Each participant will have 5 minutes to demonstrate the app, there will be 3 minutes for Q&A, and a 2 minute break interval. The Board Members present will judge on the winner and their decision will be final. Notification of winning the competition will be sent within 1 month of the day of the competition, the winner is expected to ensure the app passes Apple’s app publication guides and see it through to launch, continue to support the app, and assist with training for 3 years after the app launches. The Mac Developer Program reimbursement, gift cards, and WWDC fee will be transferred after successful launch of the app and verification of attendance to the WWDC. Be sure to register by September 30, 2014.

1 Reimbursement value not to exceed $1,600 USD and requires verification of attendance of the conference. The prizes are awarded to each entry, a team of participants making a single winning entry will only receive one ticket to the WWDC for example. 2 If there are more than 6 participants, the group will be divided into smaller groups of no more than 6 participants and at least 2 board members who will be judges. Apps will otherwise be judged the same way and the Board’s decision is final. Apps do not need to be approved by Apple by the end of the competition, but once a winner is determined the app should be launched according to Apple’s rules and the app author should help with this process. All rights to the app are forfeited by the developer and the CCNEO will own the rights to the app it chooses to use. Go Big Red! -CCNEO Board Members
