ASTM A959 310S steel austenitic stainless steel is typically used for elevated temperature applications. The high chromium and nickel content of 310S steel provides comparable corrosion resistance, superior resistance to oxidation, and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic Alloy 304. ASTM A959 310S steel is used when the application environment involves moist corrodents in a temperature range lower than that which is normally considered "high temperature" service. The lower carbon content of 310S steel does reduce its high temperature strength compared to 310.
