Navigating D.C. Public Transit and Uber To use the metro and bus system in the DC metro area (WMATA), you will need a Smartrip card, which can be purchased and reloaded at any metro station. Smartrip cards are good for both metro trains and buses within the WMATA system. To plan your route, go to Trip Planner at wmata.com.

Uber is a free app that can be downloaded to your smartphone. It is connected to your debit and/or credit card, and charges your card immediately upon completion of your ride. There is NO GRATUITY involved with this service. Uber provides you with the first name of your driver, as well as the make and model of their car and their license plate number. The app tells you how many minutes away your driver is from picking you up, how many minutes your trip is expected to take, and how much your trip is expected to cost.
