Instructions for the preparation and submission of applications
All required documents must be submitted in English.
Each application must be computer generated using a 10 point font and should include the following material: printed visiting scholar application form; passport picture; project statement; and curriculum vitae.
Candidates must email the Word file of their completed application to [email protected]
The earliest date for submission of applications is September 15, 2016. The final date for submission of applications is December 1, 2016.
Three letters of reference written in English on institutional letterhead paper, together with reference forms, should be e-mailed directly to USIEF by the candidate’s referees before the final date for submission of the application. Do not submit more than three references. All of these references should be from persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's work and with whom he/she has studied in his/her academic field. o One reference should be submitted by the applicant's doctoral degree advisor; o one by another faculty member from the applicant’s home institution; o one by a colleague in the applicant's field from outside his/her institution.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all references are submitted by the deadline so that his/her application may be properly processed.
In addition, a responsible official of two organizations/programs with which the applicant has been involved in community service activities should e-mail a letter on official letterhead paper, describing and evaluating the applicant’s contribution to the organization/program.
The project statement is the most important component of the Fulbright application. The length of the project statement should not exceed five single-spaced pages (3,500 words), including bibliography. It should present: o background; o objectives; o methodology; o a connection between past experience to what the applicant is preparing to do if he/she receives an award; the applicant should focus on what can be reasonably accomplished during the period of the grant; o an explanation of the significance of the project for the field, for Israel and the applicant’s own professional development; o plans for assessment and distribution of research results in Israel; o rationale for conducting research in the United States.
Applicants should submit, if available, documentary evidence of affiliation to an accredited university or affiliation to a non- profit research institute in the United States. It is not necessary to have a firm affiliation arranged and evidence of financial support at the time of submitting the application. The applicant's name should be given exactly as it appears on the applicant's passport. Where dates are requested, the name of the month should be given rather than the numerical figure. Those separated, divorced, or widowed should indicate their family status as "single". In references to publications, a distinction should be made between books and articles. For books, the title should be underscored and the publisher and date should be noted. For articles, the title should be given in quotation marks, followed by the name of the journal or collection (underscored) and the publication date. English translations of titles should be provided for material published in Hebrew.

Should you receive and accept an award, the Foundation will facilitate the issuance of your Exchange Visitor J-1 visa . Applicants should note that Exchange visitors whose programs are financed in whole or in part, directly or indirectly by government funding, are required to return and reside in their own country for two years following completion of their program, including any transfer of visa sponsorship, before being eligible for immigrant status; temporary worker status (H); or an intra-company transferee status (L). There is no restriction on the issuance of B1/B2 visitor’s visas .
A J-2 dependent (accompanying spouse) of a J-1 Exchange Visitor may apply to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) of the United States and request permission to work only if the income received will not be necessary to support the J-1 spouse. Permission to accept employment will have to be obtained from the INS at the place of the scholar’s residence in the United States.
Holders of J-1 professor/research scholar visas who have concluded their programs and departed from the United must remain abroad for at least twenty-four months before being allowed to re-enter the United States with a new J-1 professor/research scholar visa. There is no such limitation to re-entry to the United States as the holder of a J visa in another category (short-term scholar, specialist, international visitor), or as the holder of a student or tourist visa.
Program fellows who enter the US as J-1 visa holders must receive a special waiver in order to change their visa status to J-2 while still in the United States. The Department of State does not support such change of status requests. APPLICATION SUMMARY AND CHECKLIST
