SUMMARY OF MAIN FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE OF JOB

In accordance with the Vision, Mission, Values and strategic direction of NMCH, patient and staff safety is a priority and responsibility of all NMCH employees, as such the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Chief Dietician will be responsible for oversight of the clinical nutrition program and establishment of enteral nutrition formulary. He/she will supervise and coordinate activities of clinical dietician staff in a manner that promotes efficient and safe operations and provides appropriate professional development opportunities as required by the HPCSA. He/she will coordinate, monitor and orientate new dietetics staff. The Chief Dietician will provide input and oversight of clinical nutrition budget, coordinate inventory control and determine and implement cost containment processes. The Chief Dietician will ensure dieticians practice in accordance with regulatory standards, and work toward improving systems and process. He/she is responsible for development of policies and procedures related to clinical nutrition and dietetics. In collaboration with the health care team, the Chief Dietician will deliver world class child and family centred care to children/families by assessing nutritional status and identifying, preventing, and rectifying nutritional problems in paediatric patients at NMCH. The Chief dietician is also responsible for completion of all nutrition referrals ordered by physicians, nursing or other interdisciplinary team members for NMCH inpatients and outpatients. He/she will screen and classify nutritional risk and/or risk for malnutrition according to pre-established criteria. Provide consultative and education services to patients and their families/caregivers, physicians, learners, other health care providers and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE  Relevant degree or post graduate diploma in Dietetics from a recognized university: B.Sc./B Degree in Dietetics: 4 year integrated or 3 to 4 year + 1 year post graduate diploma  Complete community service year (since 2003)  Registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) required  Adherence to scope of practice.  Relevant professional managerial experience (minimum five years)  Experience working in a tertiary care setting (minimum three years)  Experience in patient and family education or counselling  Experience in teaching/training of other healthcare professionals  Experience in enteral and parenteral nutrition KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
