FAQ’s for Turn Louisiana State Penitentiary Angola, LA January 29 – 31, 2016

1. What are the closest airports to Angola?

Baton Rouge is approximately one hour from Angola and New Orleans is two hours from the prison. For directions to Angola visit the Awana Lifeline website, www.awanalifeline.org.

2. When should I plan to arrive/depart?

Registration opens at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 29. Our first meeting will be at 4:00 pm.

Turn ends at noon on Sunday, January 31. Please make every effort to be at the entire weekend.

3. What is the weather like in January at Angola?

The average temperature at Angola is 47 degrees in January. Check weather.com prior to packing just to be sure!

4. What can I wear at Turn? Each attendee will receive a Turn t-shirt. Turn attendees should not dress too similar to inmates. You may wear blue jeans at Turn. No shorts are allowed. Always carry your photo ID in case you are questioned by Angola staff. Do not carry any money into the prison. You can have money at the B Line Chapel (registration), Angola Museum and RC (Death Row-where you will be sleeping).

5. Can I bring my cell phone or camera to the meetings?

No, you are not allowed to bring either a cell phone or camera into the prison. However, they are allowed in the Reception Center (Death Row) where you will be staying. There is a place where you can keep them locked during the day.

6. Will I need any money at Turn?

All meals and snacks will be provided. There will be time on Saturday to visit the Angola Museum and Gift Shop. The Gift Shop takes cash and credit cards.

We will also have the Malachi Dad and Hannah’s Gift books available for sale.

7. Will I need to bring my own bedding? Prison issue sheets, a pillow and a blanket will be issued to each attendee. If you would like you may bring your own pillow and thicker blanket.

Angola will provide towels/toilet paper (Towels are prison issue and are thin, feel free to bring one from home). If you plan to shower, you should bring soap/shampoo/shower shoes or flip flops. (Shampoo should be the non-alcohol type.) Bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste. 8. What meals will be provided? The following meals will be served at Turn-dinner on Friday night, breakfast, lunch, dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

9. What do I need to do if I have a medical allergy to some foods? Please contact Jennifer at 630.540.4668 or [email protected] with any medical dietary concerns. The earlier the better.

A Turn Participant Guide will be sent to all attendees shortly after you register. The guide should be able to answer most of your questions regarding the event.
