Opening Minds, Opening Doors Application Process

VSA Texas is looking for young adults with disabilities interested in the media broadcasting industry!

Participant Requirements  Have a developmental disability*(see below for definition)  Be between the ages of 15 and 21  Demonstrate an interest in media production or recording  Turn in completed application form  Turn in a resume of work and volunteer experience  Turn in two letters of recommendation (can be from teachers, employers, friends, or family)

*Definition from the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities website www.tcdd.texas.gov - “A Developmental Disability is a severe, chronic disability that begins before the person reaches age 22 and is likely to continue throughout one’s life.”

The Opening Minds, Opening Doors project participants will work with professional artists in the radio broadcasting and sound engineer industries to learn basic media production and recording skills through classroom settings, one on one trainings, field trips and site visits.

Radio Broadcast interns and trainees will learn researching your story, writing your story, developing voice and confidence, developing presentation skills and techniques, digital recording techniques, producing segments for broadcast, and policies and procedures of live broadcast.

Sound Engineering interns and trainees will learn the elements of sound recording, sound recording equipment, mixing, sound balance, sound effects, working in the studio, and working in a live concert environment.

Flexible Schedule Participants will be assigned as an intern or a trainee based on information provided in this application. Workshops for interns and trainees are generally being scheduled for Saturdays. Field trips, site visits and internships will be on weekdays and weekends to be determined between March and July 2013. Stipends are being offered for a minimum of 20 hours for trainees and a minimum of 40 hours for interns.

Internship Leaders

Thor Armbruster has been a free-lance sound engineer, videographer and photographer for twenty-five years. Thor’s passion for narrative, disability culture, and radio can be heard on his radio show The Common Thread which airs on KOOP 91.7 community radio Mondays at 2:00 pm.

Jeff Hoskins is the sound engineer for Cactus Café at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a drummer who has played in many bands in Austin over the past thirty years. He became interested in audio production through being a recording artist, and wanting to know what all those knobs, faders, and meters meant. He has run three small studios, one in New York City, and two in Austin and has also worked as a live sound engineer at many venues, and toured the U.S. and Europe extensively with the indie- rock group Okkervil River.
