Tenth Grade General English

Geometry – Pull Out Mrs. A. Edmonds Room 548

This course will emphasize geometric concepts. Geometric figures, reasoning, coordinate geometry, parallel and perpendicular lines, and congruent triangles will be explored during the first semester. During the second semester, polygons and quadrilateral, similar triangles, circles, area, and surface area and volume will be studied.

Classroom Rules

1. Enter the room promptly and quietly. Lateness will not be tolerated—if a student enters after the bell rings, a tardy will be accounted for to the office.

2. Be ready to start class with appropriate materials and/or assigned work on your desk.

3. ONE person speaks at a time. Raise your hand to be acknowledged.

4. Listen when others speak. Respect the comments, questions, and opinions of others. Do not put others down.

5. Attentiveness in class is important. Students who are habitually inattentive are subject to disciplinary action.

Disciplinary action may take any/all of the following forms: Verbal warning/conference Phone call to parents Discipline/referral to assistant principal Removal from classroom

Academic Expectations

1. Take your work seriously and put forth your best effort at all times.

2. Follow directions and complete required work on time.

3. BRING TO CLASS: a pencil, folder, and a CALCULATOR! I require you get your own calculator. It is important to familiarize yourself with a calculator for future math assignments and testing. I will not provide you with pencils or pens. Please be responsible and bring your own pen or pencil to class daily.

4. Be responsible: keep track of short-term and long-term assignments. Find out what you missed if you were absent and make up the work. USE YOUR PLANNER! Check out the blackboard everyday—I post a daily schedule, homework, etc. Speak up if it’s blank! Make-up Work Policy All make-up work must be completed no later than five days after the day you return to school. NO EXCEPTIONS!! (Serious illness/lengthy absences will be handled with the cooperation of the counseling office.)

Late Work Policy Late homework will not be accepted. If you are absent the day homework is due, I must see the homework the first day you return to school. If a student fails to hand in a major assignment, his or her grade will be docked ten percent for each day the assignment is overdue. After five days, the student will receive a zero on the assignment.

Unexcused Absences If a student has an unexcused absence, any work due on that day will receive a zero. (This includes research papers and long-term projects.) Unexcused absences on test days will result in a zero for that test. This is a school policy and will be followed accordingly.

Grading Procedures All grades are on a straight point scale. I will use the following criteria to determine student grades:

1. Formal Assessments: a. Quizzes—announced and unannounced (10-40 points) b. Tests (50-100+ points) c. Projects (50-100+ points)

2. In-class work—In class work may be cooperative or independent work that culminates in turning in a product/demonstrating understanding at the end of class. In-class products are graded. (10-30 points)

3. Homework—In order for students to be prepared for class activities, they must complete homework. Failure to do homework results not only in low homework grades, but also in low class participation grades and low in-class work grades. BE PREPARED!! Homework will often be collected and given points based on effort.

4. Class participation—I expect students to actively participate in class. Each quarter students may earn up to 50 points for class participation. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate themselves.

All point totals are approximate.
